I don't think you should have been thumbed down for offering a fair, composed rebuttal argument. Whether right or wrong, you were just contributing to discussion. This site can be kind of a circlejerk sometimes
#146 - anonymous (02/12/2015) [-]
The thumbs down doesn't always mean that people think someone's an idiot, it can just as much mean that they disagree with them...

That's the point of the thumbs up/down system
#151 - sumbohde (02/12/2015) [-]
if everyone thumbs up what the general mass agrees with and thumbs down with what they disagree with, all you see is the same opinion at the top while any counterarguments are thumbed down and hidden. If you see an opinion you disagree with, you should say why you disagree, not just thumbing it down and leaving
#185 - anonymous (02/12/2015) [-]
Do I always have to justify my opinions? If you aske me I will imidiatly tell you why I disagree.

But I thik it would simply be bothersome if everybody had to justify their opinion in the comments after thumbing something up/down

Ignoring safewords and getting someone drunk to take advantage of them is the exact OPPOSITE of 'holding her emotional and physical safety at the utmost importance.' Getting someone to agree to let you abuse them is not what BDSM is about--exploring powerplay and sadomasochism in NON-ABUSIVE ways is what BDSM is about.

And above all else, you NEVER teach someone completely new to it about BDSM via the 'throw them in the water and hope they learn to swim' method. You can say all you want to that he warned her, but if she's never experienced it before, then she has no idea what she's getting into. Most people's initial BDSM fantasies are WAY harsher than anything they can actually take--an 'eyes are bigger than your stomach' sort of thing.

Just because he managed to use *half* the precautions he should have doesn't mean what he did wasn't abusive. Would you like to get in an airplane with a pilot that read *half* his safety manual? A car in which *half* the safety features work? There's a reason most S&M clubs--even private ones with no liability issues--have orientations, safety meetings, dungeon monitors, 2-drink maximums, and sometimes even rules against playing prior to attending a certain number of meetings.

Now, I will agree with you on one point--I don't think the author's purpose was to represent the BDSM community as a whole. However, most erotic fiction writers, when their writing skims the lines between fantasy and reality a bit too much, will include clear disclaimers that their writing is intended as fantasy ONLY and that the actions included are neither safe nor consensual. That's because they realize the power of impression that their writing can have. This should have received MORE emphasis, not LESS, when writing for inexperienced (in BDSM) audiences.

The fact he has her sign a document is so he doesn't get his ass thrown in jail if she was to ever say he abused me to the police.

fucking yes! finally someone who has actually fucking read the book and knows whats going on in it instead of bitching over shit they've read online and believed. fucking bullshit does he ply her with drink or continue after she safe words. jeeeeesus.
#145 - anonymous (02/12/2015) [-]
She was sexually inexpirienced forcing her to sign a contract by giving her an ultimatum of: piss off or let me fuck you however I want...

And the book also doesn't make a statement of telling the people that that's not how BDSM work, quite the opposite actually. And let's nor forget that BDSM is a a fetish, not a way you should be comping with traumatic experiences.

he keeps doing what the signs tell him to,
he sees a man with a certain shirt on a sign, he buys one
he sees a sign with a car, he buys one
he sees a sign with the shape of an L, he breaks his legs to have the same shape.
I think it means that we all do what commercials tell us.
