I'm reminded of this great uncle I had who served in Korea. He was leading a squad of soldiers and they all got trapped behind enemy lines. He told everyone he would get them back home, but one member of his platoon panicked and tried to start a mutiny.

My uncle shot him. And when he got everyone else back, he was the one who had to write the note of that soldiers' passing to his next-of-kin. I never knew the man, myself, but my father told me that he never talked about that while he was alive.

In this scenario, did the soldier who tried to mutiny do wrong for defying a leader he thought would get them all killed? Was my uncle wrong for not believing that soldier could've gotten them all out alive, as well?

You mention that a soldier sometimes gets bad orders, and he relies on his squad-mates for shouldering the burden of carrying them out. But -and I sincerely apologize for the disgusting analogy I'm using here, please don't read too far into it- no one forgives the Nazi foot-soldiers just because they were "following orders." But if a good soldier follows orders, then what choice did they have? If a bad soldier defies his commanding officers, who ARE those officers' checks and balances?
