History Lesson Incoming...
The idea that Hitler was Austrian and not German is teeeeechnically true, in as much as Hitler was born in the country of Austria.
However. The entire Nazi ideology was based around the idea of the German race existing above something as petty as national borders. Germans lived in Germany, but Germans also lived in Austria, and in Czechoslovakia, which is why the Nazis were so keen on acquiring those places: the people spoke German and belonged to what was perceived as the German race. Likewise, Hitler being born in Austria did not - to him at least - detract in the slightest from his status as a German.
I know nobody asked, but I'm a history student and like explaining stuff.

Well, if you ask an Austrian if they want to be part of Germany today, they will most likely say no.

Another aspect to that is that not everyone praised Hitler - he only got 30% of the votes in Germany in the early 30's. He certainly had his supporters, and Nazism had widespread support, but there's an important difference between that and the entire nation being full-blooded antisemittic. A lot of Austrians probably only welcomed them because they were German, and did not care much for the Nazi ideology and focused more on the advantages of Austria being part of the bigger Germany.
Then there's the part of the crowd that cared nothing about politics, and simply thought Hitler to be a good leader. And he certainly was a strong and charismatic one.

I agree with everything your saying. I just have an issue with how Austrians today try to hide that they had anything to do with Germany and pretend they were forced into when they weren't. I also feel that is one of the main reasons Austria doesn't want to be a part of Germany.
