I understand that it has a religious origin, but 'ts pretty much become an instinct to some of us, and it isn't fair to be punished for that. People still say "Oh my God" all the time, even people with a different/no religion, and that's pretty much the same thing.

One of the very rare cases in which Spanish makes more sense to me than English is this. In Spanish when someone sneezes they go "Salud" -translated to Health, in English- which disallows obnoxious twats trying to make a point and well intentioned idiots to do things like this.

Well the origin of "bless you" and "God bless you" goes back to the olden days when people thought the act of sneezing was actually a demon trying to steal your soul, and they were trying to "bless" the person so that they would be saved. But I get what you're saying.

What kinda Christian are you ( I remember way back 1.5 yrs ago I think you mentioned protestant?) again?
#84815 - jokeface (08/14/2014) [-]
I simply identify as Christian, with no sub-denomination. I read the Protestant Bible, which is used by almost all sub-denominations of Christianity and that is precisely why I don't bother to further classify myself. I see no point in dividing the religion beyond which version of the Bible we read, because aside from the Catholic Bible and the Orthodox Bible, they all say the same thing, so I don't understand why we're breaking up into different groups.
I was raised Baptist, but I don't actually believe that baptism is fundamentally necessary for salvation; rather, I believe the ceremony is symbolic of a spiritual gesture which can be achieved with or without being dunked in water. Still, that's the church I grew up in, so that's where most my knowledge of Christianity comes from (aside from the further reading I've done on the web).

Not according to the Baptist Church. There are other Christian churches that believe in baptizing babies, like the Catholics. But we don't believe that a baby is capable of making the conscious decision to devote their life to Christ, so we wait until they're old enough to understand what's happening.

I wouldn't call it a mockery, but I would call it heavily misguided. Baptism is not something that should be done out of being pressured by others. It's about forming a relationship with God. You're refusing said relationship, ergo the act means nothing. The fact that you felt remorse is better, I suppose, than not feeling remorse. It shows that there is a part of you that recognizes the significance of baptism and feels uncomfortable with the dishonesty of participating in a ceremony of which you don't believe in the spiritual value. As a Christian, I would say that your guilt is God reaching out to you. He's making you realize that the baptism is in fact sacred, and by falsely accepting it, you've actually discovered it's true significance.
