Except it works through letters first, and each character you add blows the number of possibilities up massively.

Using numbers and punctuation bumps the average wait time from a day or two to several months of cumputing time.
#25 - thegrandexemplar (09/27/2013) [-]
so now, i read somewhere that its actually better to use randomly unconnected words like CowboyPotatoes than a random string of letters/numbers/characters. is that actually legit or what?
#26 - wizi (09/27/2013) [-]
its better for you as its usually easier to remember

the main factor to consider when protecting yourself from a brute force attack is the character length and obvious passwords such as 123456 etc.

once you go over 12 chars, nobody will bother bruteforcing you unless they get insane cash from it

12 is the magic number? Why, because of the calculations?
#60 - wizi (09/27/2013) [-]
Well 12 is not really a magic number, but as you can imagine, the time grows exponentially.

12 is a number when the time simply becomes not worth it, as the time to guarantee the break of a password exceeds a year, while for example 10 is still achievable in 2 days.

For example 15 chars with just lowercase alphabet (26 chars) already takes over 50 thousand years to break.

The problem here is, that number passwords of less than 10 digits can be broken instantly. Same goes for alphabet passwords under 7 chars.

User avatar #562 - roflcopterkklol (08/27/2013) [-]
Japan likes small cars because they have so many cars on the road. smart car seems relevant considering they are tiny.
