That's fair enough. In the UK we don't automatically use that, or haven't for most unlucky friends I've spoken I've heard of people reporting the IMEI and turning the phone into a paperweight but not so far heard of it being automatically linked to your account. That's a pretty cool feature.

Contract phones where I come from work with any provider. Sure they can be pin-locked but the one in the story wasn't, and even so, I can wipe an iphone in about 45mins with software from major sites.

All I would do in the UK is destroy the SIM and pop a new one in, pay as you go. And as far as jailbreaking a phone, you can wipe an iphone with fully legitimate iOS software. Even if you fucked the OS up you can start again and again.

The number is still connected to the meid/imei No matter what sim you put in it, or if you wipe it or not. once the device id connects to a service of any sort, it shows up as either a lost or stolen phone, or someone could look it up on the Find my iphone app. Long story short, Imei's on phones don't change.

Also, ask a verizon wireless employee anything

It's an unlocked iphone, pop the sim out and pop a new one in. Plus I can wipe them from my PC, delete all the personal stuff. Don't really get what you mean about the account.

If they reported the IMEI stolen and deactivated it, sure, it would just be a tablet mac.

When you have an account with a company (verizon, Sprint, tmobile, etc) you can only activate that phone on that service. The only way this would be possible is yes, removing the sim card. But you would also end up having to jailbreak said phone. which might in turn, give you a very exspensive doorstop. But It's not like it would be a loss anyways, since it wouldn't be your phone.
