The Soviets won the battle of Stalingrad a bit over a year before the Americans arrived in France. The Soviets effectively stopped the German army and began their counter attack. The US joined the war (against Germany) after the Wehrmacht and Waffen-SS was severely weakened.

By the time D-Day came, the German army and Waffen-SS was beginning to suffer from inexperienced replacements, degrading equipment, low levels of fuel and demolarisation.

tl;dr Soviet Union began forcing back Nazi Germany before D-Day.
