from what i remember electrons spin around atoms, and because of that each atom causes an magnetic field , the atoms of most materials don't spin in the same direction so the remaining magnetic field is almost non existent. A group of atoms with electrons causing a magnetic field in the same direction is called a Weiss-field (not sure since English is not my native language) If a material like Fe2O3 has all the Weiss-fields causing a field in the same direction , it is magnetic.
