I use a kit with 1300 ½ watt metal films from China and they are very good - think I paid 50 bucks for them shipped. Yup, I live in Denmark. The majority of electrical appliances are ungrounded, fed with 50Hz 230V AC - very similar to your 60Hz 115V system when talking about mains hum, shielding and power supplies. 60Hz will generate a little more heat from the diode bridge, but it won't be any issue with this kind of electronics.

copyhat (05/10/2013) [-] Do you mean the ARRL handbook? There is a copy available at my local library which I have had home a couple of times. There isn't a need to be critical on resistor brands, they all have consistent specs. Pick any 1% tolerance metal film resistor you like; I don't see how there can be reliability issues with something as simple as a resistor. Precise capacitor values aren't needed in 96% of circuit designs, even the high spec ones are within 5% which is excellent. High temperature tolerance capacitors are fine if they are low ESR, analog electronics aren't rocket science and some miliohms of extra resistance is not even measurable on a PCB where the resistances in a single trace is larger. So you need to output unbalanced -10 dB signal through RCA plugs, balanced +4 dB (pro level) through XLR's and then a headphone output with it's own volume control? I think you can use the same opamp for balanced and unbalanced, but you'll need a separate one for the headphone output because of different impedance. BTW, use Neutrik RCA's and XLR's, Switchcraft makes the best 6.3mm jack plugs (all my XLR cables and DIY mic preamps use Neutrik while all my guitar- and patchcables are Switchcraft) For selectable op amps, I'd put four or how many you like to have side by side, sharing the same power supply outlet and analog inputs while a two or four pole selector wires all the opamp outputs so one opamp can be chosen at a time. Think of the layout as a speaker selector in an amplifier. There is no side effects if the switch is in good quality and the chassis is properly shielded. The power supply will be fine if it is inside the same chassis, just have a sheet of mu-metal between the transformer and the DAC electronics to shield against magnetic flux from the core of the transformer. Mu-metals are the best for the job. The 2234 is still in stock at many suppliers as a DIP package, should be easy enough to get. You can integrate FET switching if you want to eliminate mechanical contacts. A good quality pot should to the trick if you want variable levels, otherwise a opamp based volume control is good - see picture. Are you experienced in SMD soldering? You can get small PCB's on eBay which mounts the 0.65mm pin width IC's on a DIP. Where in the world are you situated? The US? #451

iyr (05/12/2013) [-] Not ARRL, but something similar and bulkier, can't for the life of me remember the title. 1% tolerance resistors are a little more premium; brand consistency is good for reliable support. I've used cheap and not-so-cheap resistors in simple timer circuits. They might perform the same for some amount of time, but after awhile the better resistor(s) had a more consistent performance over its lifetime (home-made turbo game controller). Though, it could've just been one bad resistor, I didn't bother to do any validation. Oky Doky: Opamp Array 1 (dedicated volume control): -10dB unbalanced RCA, Neutrik +4dB balanced XLR, Neutrik Opamp Array 2 (dedicated volume control): 1/4" Headphone, Switchcraft I'm not sure how much of the volume control should be left to the hardware or the software. I intend on using a DSP that is ASIO compliant so I won't half to code my own driver. I neglected to mention that the main input would be USB. Software control can be finicky while hardware can be reliable but a faulty pot could introduce undesired problems. Chassis design is up in the air at this point, but I'd like everything to be self-contained. I've even contemplated designing the PCB to the mini-ITX dimensions since there are a slew of well-designed mini-ITX computer cases on the market especially since most are well-grounded (when a regular psu is installed). Also, the ease of disassembly would make maintenance all that much more easier. Modifying one of these case wouldn't be too difficult and the PSU mounting area could be plated with magnetic shielding. Thank you for the insight on Mu-metals. As far as soldering at all, I'm bloody terrible. But I do know someone who's extremely adept at soldering who'd be willing to help at a moment's notice. I live in the US, assuming your profile info is accurate, there's probably a far difference in the current, wiring and grounding between our local wall socket types. No reply is too late. After reading more, xicon seems to be a consistent brand. Just use 1/4 watt resistors throughout. For the PCB, I intend on using NI Multisim to design the circuit diagram and simulate it, then use its companion software Ultiboard to design the traceroutes for the board. My uncle's a retired electrical engineer who used to design traceroutes for PCBs back when Macs were still using the PowerPC architecture and would be willing to help. The hardest part of this whole process would be fabricating the PCB. Most of the DIY options I've seen aren't precise enough for 0,65mm pin width in some of the chips, which means I'd have to go hunting for a local firm that could print off single or dual layer PCBs. Not to mention these DIY methods tend to be very labor intensive and time-consuming if you make a single mistake or have a flaw in the traceroutes. I've seen PCB printing machines go for as low as 1000 USD, which would make for a nice investment on future projects, but is just a wee bit expensive for me right now. Unfortunately, the OPA-2234 is no longer manufactured in 8-pin dip packages (though still made in soic packages). It's not too much of a big deal, but I'd have to hunt for soic-to-8pdip adapters. I'm currently using just plain ol' LME49860s in my soundcard. I've also heard good things about the MUSES-8920s, but 20 USD for a single chip is kinda pricey imo.

| Alright, I have the time to write again :P Resistors: There are many types out there. Carbon composition are the oldest still in use - highly unstable and with inherited high noise floor which only gets worse as they heat up... The best resistors are metal film, very close to no noise and no drift during heatup. Capacitors: Use 105 degree (heat rating), low-ESR (resistance). best noise figures and longest life span - at least three decades for the best. Good brands: Rubycon, Philips (their blue series is a classic), Jamicon and Elna. The power supply - consists of transformer, diode bridge, ripple reducing capacitor and the actual regulating circuit which is simple. The transformer doesn't need to be fancy, just a standard 20-30 volt output one will do. The Diode bridge can be bought in a complete package; AC in, rectified AC out. The waveform needs to be constant DC to power the DAC. A capacitor is needed - should be around 10,000 uF with a 63 volt rating or higher (to be safe). Higher capacities reduce the mains hum, but you'll smoke the diodes if the value is too high - let's just say that the theoretical maximum is around 17,000 uF. Then the actual regulator circuit. What kind of preamp would you like to have in the output stage? A single positive supply rail can be carried with a simple 7800-series regulator. An 7805 for 5 volts in the digital IC's and an 7815/18 for 15-18 volts on the analog IC's. Split-supply can be managed with a 7900-series regulator which can do negative voltage for the more complicated ourput IC's. I have the diagram to a little more complicated PSU which can set the voltage even higher if you have the need - it has a feedback system using a transistor. How would you like to design the PCB? You can do it on Veroboard, but prepare to have a little crosstalk and a hard time faultfinding the build... Do you know any people who etches PCB's? I can etch one for you if you, but I don't have the tooling to do complicated microtraces as seen from small surface mounted chips. I also can make a diagram for the output stage if you like. Specify how much amplification is needed and I'll calculate the values for ya. You seem to go for best performance, so I would recommend the OPA2234 opamp as it's a Burr Brown audiophile version of the very good TL072. Any questions? Just find me on facebook where I'm easier to get in touch with. Facebook.com/sorenhammer Well that's a lot to take in. Fuck, I used to have a huge book on ameteur radio which would've contained all sorts of good information on this subject. I was going to get in contact with an acquaintance, an electrical engineer, who works at Lockheed Martin for his recommendation on brands of capacitors and resistors considering there's much less tolerance for low reliability and stability in the aerospace industry. That said, I know high heat capacitors can run a little inefficiently at room temperature than the temperature they're designed for; not sure how hot they would be getting in this kind of usage anyway or how much of disparity would actually occur. As far as the preamp goes, I'm looking to integrate 3 outputs: a pair of balanced RCAs, a pair of XLRs and an amplified 1/4" headphone jack (with the most emphasis on the headphone), not sure if that's helpful enough to go on, pardon my ignorance. However, one of the cornerstones of this project would be selectable opamp sets. Swappable opamps have been around forever, but I haven't seen anything that will let you readily switch between installed opamps on the fly with a simple knob. Otherwise, it's somewhat of a pain in the ass to remove the cover of the device, replace the opamps, put on the cover, see how they sound with particular equipment / music, rinse and repeat. Also, would it be possible to integrate a simple pot circuit to tune the output voltage of the preamp making it more suitable for a wider range of compatibility with amps? The PSU makes me nervous since the transformer would be generating large internal B-fields and I haven't fully figured out how to implement effective magnetic shielding. Aside from that, TI makes decent components for stabilizing DC to be deployed to digital components. #444

Less than 24 hours after my last final, my sleep schedule is already nocturnal.
Sure. If it's not too much of a hassle, just try to take some detailed shots of the traces, colors of the resistors and, if possible, the labels on the capacitors.
I was actually thinking about talking to an acquaintance who works as an electrical engineer for Lockheed Martin about parts. Although they outsource a lot of their components, I would assume the kinds of caps and resistors they stick into an F-16 are just a wee-bit step above the stuff you'd pick up at a local electronics hobby shop. Particularly because resistors introduce a lot of noise into the signal of a circuit as they get warmer and the aerospace industry has a low tolerance for cheap or obtrusive components.

programming project failed spectacularly, but still has good salvageable bits.
Luckily I did so well in the course, that the project will hardly put a dent in my grade and the professor is very forgiving of project mishaps because his motto for coding is "Fail fast, Fail Often, Fail Early."
Last final is this monday, then the semester's over.
Also found out that I did much better last semester in most of my classes than I thought (except Calc III, the only class I did bad in, I failed it)
So pretty good. How about yourself?

Nice to hear you're doing well man!
What was that project about?
School's ok, though math I had to retake to get it barely through, I'm a complete mathtard. Pretty much every subject except except business communications where I have to send one offer lying on my desktop, is completed and I'll have extra courses as a base for next year when I complete these. So ok, at least.

The project could be anything programming related. The professor offered students to "routes" to end the semester; do C++ assignments or a project or both. I tried for both, but ultimately put more emphasis on C++ since the project was for students who didn't wish to continue learning coding.
This was about all I got done (more info in description):

You probably already know this, but math isn't nearly as important for business as most people think. My mom has a degree in business wherein she had to learn a bunch of high-level math. In 20+ years as a deli manager, she's never needed to use any more than basic arithmetic.
Take in as much book-learnins as you can.

Whatever floats your boat. Been really busy lately with a programming project and friends nagging me to play tf2 to work on designing a dac. The amp would be the most difficult part since that's mostly analog electronics. So whatever you decide to order, could you be a pal and crack it open, take some good quality pics of the circuitry and send them my way? Would be much appreciated. If taking the cover off voids the warranty, then don't do it.
Asus' customer support is notoriously horrible. Their products are usually top notch but you're essentially depending on that quality for longevity; may God have mercy on your soul if you have to work with Asus' customer support.
You should've returned it directly to the retailer where they're usually forced to give you an entirely new unit all together, not a reburbished or repackaged one from a scrap pile like Asus' "replacement" parts.
Most western companies have thankfully figured out that screwing over customers is a really bad idea (save a few exceptions), too bad this is a difficult concept for eastern companies to grasp.

That should be possible.
Sigh... I was the retailer, I got new units at both times, never contacted asus, dealt with the finnish asus distributor also known as... "Also".
The first service on the nad happened in four days and all interaction was handled via phone, which took one phonecall of five minutes. I might keep it, it's an awesomely spec'd amp, I'll just see it it works after this time. It still sucks to have a product four weeks old that's already been fixed...

Three new units dead? That's not a good sign.
I heard rumors that Asus is beginning to cheap out on parts and sell on name alone, hopefully that's not the case but isn't impossible. Similar thing happened with one of their popular X58 motherboards where the early ones sold performed really well for a long time, but later ones were often doa's, performed badly or died after a few weeks.

Probably gonna change major to computer science and get a degree of sorts in programming.
For the most part, I've been pretty miserable the past year while in engineering track. The unfortunate thing is, after transferring universities and having the intent on switching majors, it may take up to four more years to get the credits needed to graduate. I've made it this far without having to take out any loans, but I don't know if I could possibly go another four years without student loans. Don't wanna graduate with a fucking mortgage's worth of debt.
Also, my mom will be retiring next fall and selling the house, so I'll have to find a place to live in the meantime and won't be able to return for summers or holiday.
How about you?

Moving out isn't the problem, I'd love to have my own place.
The problem is that the housing crisis was one of the biggest factors that contributed to the global economic crash. Nowadays trying to get financed is extremely difficult (my brother has a friend with a stable $50,000/yr job and can't get financing for a home), rent in Colorado is relatively high compared to most places for a basic apartment, especially the tech areas in and around Denver.
At this point it's more feasible to buy a freight shipping container and furnish it into a small living space.

Thought you never wanted monitors.
Anyway, here, have this. There's a good chapter on sound/hearing as well as wave properties.
forwardsweep.tonidoid.com/urlq41va2
All I know about acoustics is that chambers with as few parallel sides as possible will produce the best response, hence why many string instruments have a peculiar curvy shape to their bodies.
"the time the waves take to reach the listening point"
That sounds completely pointless. Generously speaking, the variation of speed of sound based on temp, air pressure or humidity for different climates would be about ten percent at the very most. Assuming you're standing two meters away from these things, that's less then one millisecond difference between two climate extrema.
/objective skepticism.

I've heard a few adam, behringer and dynaudio monitors, didn't really like them. Saying I didn't like actives because of those would be like "I don't like metal because avenged sevenfold".
I also don't like how actives are mainly built so that only one speaker has an amp and the other one is passive, genelec's have their own amp per speaker.
If the calibration took about 5 minutes and corrected the response of our listening room significantly, what's there not to like? There was only a 2,1cm difference between the speakers which according to software resulted in 0,8db differences in certain frequencies. I doubt you'd be so sceptic if you would've heard and seen the calibration.

No, I mean when I've mentioned monitors in the past, you said you weren't interested in monitors, regardless of what technology they're using, simply just cause.
Besides, I'm not saying the calibration is a waste of time (in fact, the chapter on sound in the book I sent you has a lot of good information of placement of sound sources for best resonance for particular frequencies), I'm saying it's pointless to tell me "the time the waves take to reach the listening point" because
1.) That can be calculated by hand based on air pressure, temperature, and humidity
2.) The above value does not not vary enough with climate extrema to make a difference to be relevant
3.) Publishing that as a spec with monitors would be like Canon selling a camera telling you how long it takes a light wave from an object to reach the lens even though see 1 and 2.
I'm not skeptical of fine-tuning audio equipment for the best response (I think you'd enjoy some of my uni's recording rooms in the music building, the audio playback is unbelievable and why I would plan on eventually getting krk's since that's what they use).
Using metrics to find the best monitor placement for optimized listening experience is believable, but saying the speed of sound makes enough of a difference to said calibration just looks like snake-oil marketing.
It's fairly common for companies to add useless/pointless specs to their product to make them look more appealing whether or not it makes a difference in the performance.

Yeah, well the word "monitors" is a bit tricky here, of course I'm not interested in them because I don't have a studio, active speakers are another thing but I haven't found a decent competitor in that range aside this brand, and I'm not the only one with this opinion.
It's not really a mentionable spec, he just used it as a little detail to showcase how goddamn nitty-gritty and all covering precise the calibration is.
I'm still convinced that the especially the behringer truth series or any kef, genelec or dynaudio's could beat the krk's, though they have an attractively low price (partially because they're not real actives)

Where I live surge protectors are built in to the house as per city/state housing codes. And even if they weren't, most of our local infrastructure has been versatile/reliable enough such that voltage spikes are very rare, making surge protectors somewhat irrelevant.
If you want to protect sensitive electronics, I believe most UPS' have built-in surge protectors and are designed for computers.

Output power can be easily increased by installing a better fuse in the breaker box, don't even need an electrician to do it. Not like it matters since newer parts are more efficient.
Funny you should say that since most surge protectors are designed with digital electronics in mind, not just "measly" computers.
Modern chipsets will usually have a single controller for every few USB ports. Having multiple devices on a single controller can result in them generating interference with eachother, it's usually harmless and negligible but for sensitive stuff it's noticeable. That being said, there's nothing wrong with a usb noise isolator, but try playing with the plug configurations before dropping 60€ on a device you may not need. You may need to consult your manual for info on which ports are handled by the chipset or handled by an extra controller on the motherboard.

The supra ones sure aren't since they're best known for their hdmi and analog interconnects. When I say measly I mean my own computer, it's not enough of a reason alone for me to get a usp, but of course there are people with heavier and more important builds that absolutely need to work at all times, mine kinda doesn't.
I'll have to try that out, although I was just trying it out in the first place so I probably wouldn't get the green key in the first place. As you may guess I don't have a lot of use for a usb dac.
The Firestone USB key lineup would make great laptop accessories though, although I've been planning on getting a nuforce airdac for future laptop use, or a meridian explorer kind of travel friendly dac with a headphone output.

Though it is technically acappella, it interferes with the traditional notion of what acappella is; just singing. There's already plenty of good music with real instruments for that.

If you can, you might be able to pick up an Nvidia Geforce 660 ti on sale for that price (trying to account for exchange rate and import tax), if can't find one, then a non-ti 660 will do fine.
You could also consider getting an AMD radeon 7850; however, if you plan on buying a second card to pair in the future, Nvidia's SLI tends to perform better than AMD's crossfireX for multiple card configurations.
If you want decent performance and to save a little money, go for a Geforce 650 ti Boost or a Radeon 7790. These cards are cheaper, but have excellent price/performance ratios and will work with up to one other similar card for multicard pairing.

Yeah easter is celebrated, but it's on the weekend when most people are off anyway.
Most schools set their own week off for spring at random weeks in May; shame they can't all agree on one week or I could've spent it with my sister, just been playin' tf2 instead.

My sis was spending the night here at ours too, I managed to seel my subwoofer (didn't had a long life in my use lol) and center speaker to his fiance.
I've been doing nothing as well.
Another stupid thing that happens soon, summertime. Something that the germans invented to get an extra lighted hour in the evening to "save energy", still used in the 21st century.

Never been able to see the importance of a center speaker for audio, but that's just me.
Sounds like the euro-version of daylight-savings, but for summer. Only a fool think they could cut a foot off a blanket, staple it to the other end and think they have a longer blanket.
This is off-topic, but is it possible for people to gain finnish citizenship, through working, living there (owning property), or taking standard tests for citizenship (like language, history, etc)?
'Cause there's been some serious bullshit going on the us gov right now (shit will be hitting the fan soon enough) and I've been contemplating moving to europe; possibly London, Baden-Baden, or anywhere in Finland.

Why do you think I sold it? It'd be good in a 5,1 setup where it helps to center the front zone sounds, useless and actually bad for music.
Yeah, exactly...
Creating new topics is never bad.
Yes it is, my muslim friend is a finnish citizen, moved here as a refugee from Chechnya, you could look to it more around the web tho.
Think about where you move around here to move, the prices for accommodation vary pretty largely.
It'd be cool to meat if you ever came here.

Well, the order I listed the locations is order of preference:
London, no language barrier (few people told me I'd fit in well there, not sure though)
Baden-Baden, already have a strong foundation in german language; beautiful friendly town.
Finland, your government run by trained monkeys paid off by corporations (as far as I can tell). But finnish as a written language scares me: too many umlauts, seriously what gives?

Same here. As efficient as cycling is, walking is more relaxing and gives you more time to seclude yourself in thought and listen to music.
No customers, just other employees and work-orders. (Though, I've had an IT-related job that had to deal with customers and sometimes the customer can get very annoying).
Well like I said, get a butt-load of certifications/degrees and you can land such a job for around 60000 a year give or take. If you do a good enough job and keep things running stably and smoothly you'll paid a nice salary just to make sure servers remain plugged in.

Spot on! Cept on the cold days, perhaps it woulda been easier to cycle. But more often than not it's always nicer to walk.
Mhm, I said this once and I'll say it again. Perfect work conditions! I have never had the experience with dealing with customers, but I really don't want to. I just fear having a single stupid person who I'm supposed to help/serve and they cause a huge problem. Which is why I'd rather work behind the scenes. much better that way.
But over all, it all actually sounds rather neat, would be enough to keep me happy.
Also, I'ma hit the sack, it's almost 9 and I'm super tired. Goodnight/afternoon for now! (Silly timezones)

Have no idea what a level 2 diploma is, or if it's only relevant to IT so you'll need to elaborate. Here, the highest level of IT education you can get is a an associate's (degree if that means anything to you). Some technicians will distinguish themselves by getting many associates' and certifications because only having one degree or a couple of certifications doesn't make you too valuable in the american job market.

Sure, I'd much appreciate it. I don't game much because usually there's shiny new hardware or music that gets to my disposable income before games and I'm too much of a moralfag to pirate games.
Yeah some. Colleges that teach mostly IT stuff are called technical schools here in the States (not sure about anywhere else) and are much less stringent on admissions with lower tuition than universities.
Macroeconomics is just the branch of economics that studies how governments and countries interact economically as well as how laws and policies affect things; as opposed to micro, which is how cities and individual stores/companies operate economically.
19.75 years, give or take.

Okie dokie lokie! I'm kinda the same with pirating, but it's more of the fact that I'm lazy, and would rather just fork out money than putting effort into pirating. Also much easier in every aspect too.
I had no idea of that. Either I live under a rock, or just nobody here calls it by those names. I have no idea. But yes, for the most part. Much cheaper. Actually here, college is free till you're 18. For once I'm glad to still be youngish.

Well, as Gabe Newell said, piracy is an issue of pricing and distribution, not because people are inherently pricks.
I'd pirate an EA game, because I don't want to have to pay $60 for a game on their shitty distribution service, but they don't have games worth pirating anyway.
>college is free until you're 18
EVEN PUBLIC SCHOOL HERE STILL HAS MANY FEES FOR POINTLESS SHIT TO THE EXTENT IT'S NOT EVEN FREE. EXPLOIT THE HELL OUT OF THAT SHIT WHILE YOU CAN
Economics (micro or macro, but preferably the latter) is a very practical knowledge set to have and it's useful to just about anyone, regardless of what your intended career is. Dunno how you would like it, but I personally found it very interesting and fun to learn.
On spring holiday, no job, in college majoring in math because fucked if I know what to do with my life. How about you? Any intent for internships, continuing education?

That actually makes a fair bit of sense. I often pay for many games no matter how bad they are, except for anything not on steam. I really really hate origin. Used it to play BF3, I just didn't like it.
Kinda feel like I should try that, although I'm not too sure, as I'll explain in a moment.
Mhm, I'm not 100% about it, it does sound like something that'd be handy and useful and make me a smarter person and and. However it has numbers and shit... They scare me.
Well, at least it's something I guess ^^ I'm sure you'll know what to do eventually, showering often helps with these thoughts. Trust me, I'm a science.
And isn't a internship like an apprenticeship or something? Darn all these words I don't know, I need to move out from this rock. But yes, if it is, I plan to get something like an apprenticeship, get my life started and what not. I would stay on at college, but I wanna start earning (Even a small amount) Of money and say it's honest cash.

There isn't as much math to economics as you might think. It's mostly recognizing patterns and seeing how one industry impacts another. There is some math, yes, but not much more than just simple geometry, arithmetic and a wee bit of algebra.
That being said, it's a relatively easy subject to take in school (provided you're not extremely lazy) but something that would be hard to learn independently.
Apprenticeship and internship may mean the same thing (dunno for sure though, but let's assume they do for now). They're great for experience and more importantly learning, but not all pay.
Good internship/apprenticeship experience will go further in the job market than outstanding marks in education, but good marks will usually mean a better paying apprenticeship (at least from what I've been told). Either way, you can only gain from working an apprenticeship, so you should definitely go for it.
And thank you very much for the game!

Exactly, and that's what I hope to achieve from it, knowledge. Not just of the subject, but actually how work life is, having never worked a real day in my life too.
Summed it up pretty well, and my marks in education weren't to bad, I like to think.
Got a C in all science, maths and English, which was kinda a surprise to me. Even though y'know, it's not that great, still goodish.

That isn't bad. Though I probably don't need to tell you that competition would be fierce for an apprenticeship (at least they are in the States), so be prepared to do a lot of running around for interviews and hwut-not.
Also, (this'll sound like common sense, but I'll say it anyway) make sure you can actually get to your apprenticeship location before you bother applying.
I once made the horrible mistake of applying (and getting) an internship opportunity at a lockheed martin facility which would've been awesome, but had to cancel because I couldn't commute there. ;_;
had to settle, working in an IT office at a tech school

I can imagine the s7 being a working machine, but the extra thickness of the hardware in the screen, the weight and the fact that you'll probably have to plug shit to the screen part annoys me, and it can't be good for the build quality.

If it's using a glass screen, it'll be just fine. "you'll probably have to plug shit to the screen" lolwut
Weight isn't a specification of the ultrabook standard, but it's not like a whopping 14" could get too heavy anyways.
Unless you're doing heavily threaded applications, you don't need an i7. What exactly would you be using an ultrabook for?

I thought that since the screen is a standalone machine, some of the connections would be innit, but that was a retarded thought...
I'd buy the very full office for it and use it at work and school, and for entertainment at home when I'm too lazy to use the pc, so I guess the i5's would do, I have that in my pc anyways. It's just that the i5 models have the tiny 128 gb ssd... and I'm not as much of a cloudfag as you. I don't even think that 200€ is much of a upgrade in price with those specs after we've passed the 1,2k mark anyway.

Unless the screen is completely detachable, all of the connections and hardware will be in/on the base.
If that's the case, make sure you can find something with good capacity now, cause ultrabooks aren't as upgrade-friendly as traditional notebooks, especially for hdd space. Most use a less-common thinner formfactor drive and some use proprietary storage.

The difference in performance between 1333 and 1600 isn't all that noticeable.
However, the 8GB is probably (gonna stress the word 'probably') running in dual channel mode whereas the 4GB is most likely running in single channel mode.
Dual Channel 1333 > Single Channel 1600.
For the most part, the only major difference between and i5 and an i7 is threads. The i7 is hyper threaded (extra thread for every core) and the i5 isn't.

You tell me now?
Apple MacBook Air 13" 256 GB SSD Intel Core i5 1,8ghz 4 GB 1600mhz ddr3 1429€
HURR MACS ARE SO EXPENSUH. I've never really understood why people think they're that expensive, compared to the real competition like the s7, they're ok, even cheap'ish.
You know... would it be, totally retarded to get that one instead...?

Ultrabooks: fake Macbooks with Win8, that's just abooot it. Cheap ultrabooks cut corners, better fully-featured ones are more akin, both in cost and feel, to a Macbook.
They're only expensive because you can get a bulky, ugly, heavy laptop for less that has approximately similar hardware.

That's just it, I like a very movable laptop, and the slight benefits of windows freedom would be appreciated.
Why can't laptops be like phones and make new standards as a part of their overall technological evolution?
The ones with the most performance are slim and pretty by default, shit, even the entry midrange products are pretty usable these days.
The dell is ugly as hell...

Yeah, I was actually thinking of a new transformer too, though you know, they'll never come to the real level of usability on the web as even the meh-est windows/mac laptops
Better get a better laptop at once
