 Spoilers below, talking about why The Mist was one of the greatest horror movies ever, at least IMO. That's why the ending was great. Because this whole movie is about losing hope. Losing hope that the mist is just a benign disaster, losing hope of keeping everyone safe, losing hope of fighting back, losing hope in humanity. Face it, if the movie ended with the main character getting pulled off into the mist you would have totally agreed with his actions, you'd probably have praised his strength of character to give everyone the easy way out and suffering the consequences. THAT'S what makes the ending good, because no matter what you think about him after the fact, he was actually doing the right thing. that's what makes the movie such a good horror movie. Because it actually instills feelings of horror, instead of a bunch of spooks and then a wrap up. And the more you think about it, the more horrifying it gets. Did you notice that the military pulled up from behind their vehicle? They were driving away from safety the entire time. Not only that, since the mist had sound warping effects, what they were hearing as they drove weren't monsters in the mist like they thought, it was actually the sound of engines. They weren't just 20 seconds from being saved at the end of the movie, they were 20 seconds from being saved almost the entire time they were driving away from the store.  Wait, so what actually happens? I do not plan on watching it because fuck horror films. I understand there is an art in making them, but it is not one I appreciate.  A guy and his family you follow through the film survive. They get in a car and drive for hours until it runs out of gas, in the mist. By this time they've seen the basically demonic nightmare inducing creatures, and have a revolver and only 5 bullets. They make the decisions, and outside the car you seen 5 muzzleflashes through the windows, and it pans inside to see the husband crying and trying to pull the trigger with the gun in his mouth, because they didn't have enough bullets so everyone could die easily. He waits a bit, sees fire, looks over, and the military driving through, ready to save them. He doesn't just sit in the car at the end though. Immediately after he kills the other inhabitants of the car including his son, he gets out of the car and screams at the creatures of the mist to come kill him. He hears noises in the mist from his right, and turns to face his death. A silhouette forms, but instead of a monster, a tank rolls into view, and the mist clears off of the main character. He is confused, like he doesn't believe what he's seeing. Suddenly it hits him, and he says "They died . . . for what?" then breaks down as he's hit by despair, because now he has to live with the fact that he killed his son and his friends for nothing. | ||
