Removing a brain tumor
Now now, I also think this anon is full of shit. But seriously? Super Heroes and Aliens are not a good platform for talking about social or political issues. It's the ultimate failing of the X-Men, mutants ARE fucking dangerous and can shoot lightning bolts out there eyes and kill people just by looking at them giving people a legitimate reason to fear and despise them. Gay people do not have such magic powers and they can't hurt you
physically anyway, radical activists who support gay issues certainly harm the sanctity of the institutions of marriage, gender, and the nuclear family
so violent persecution of them appears laughably extreme. Crystal Gems can combine into massive juggernauts of destruction and have invaded the earth with the intent to conquer, fearing them and wanting them gone is a legitimate response since they are dangerous as fuck. Using them to make some sort of social commentary on...whatever the fuck Steven was doing at the end of that episode...is an idea that fails on arrival and couldn't work even on paper. GG SU writers...
I mean if you really fucking read into it, yeah. But overall the show really doesn't try to push any agenda. I mean the main message is to accept people for who they are. Rarely does the show ever bring up conflict between people and aliens, and even then its done ironically.
Not to start an arguement with you McBurd, but its very clear from how the gems regard fusion and some of Rebecca's quotes in interviews and tweets it's very clear she's trying to impart at least some sort of message on sexuality. She's even admitted to alot of the relationships being based on her experiences as a bisexual woman as well as a focus on sexual consent (there's a rather unnerving quote from her on the Stevonnie fusion where she referred to it as a metaphor for puberty and how a growing woman becomes objectified which, given her other quotes focusing on sexual consent, have some depressing implications for her...). The point is, the show is trying to push a message of some sorts throughout its run. Whether its constant hints of homosexuality (Sapphire and Ruby's relationship is almost comically overt) or same sex parenting its just that the Rock People became way too obvious and political with Steven going straight up drag at the end (he's like 13) and it also feels a little sexual for a kids show...
This isn't the most daming of quotes ouf there, there was some where she outright admitting to it but I only saw it in videos and not screencapped...
Right, I'm not saying it isn't
I'm saying its not rammed down your throat like some of the other more PC things out there. Its teaching people to accept one another regardless of who or what they are. And yeah, fusion is directly related to same-sex relationships and shit, and there are characters in the show opposed to fusion, but they dont outright say "you're wrong and terrible for opposing fusion". And even then, the bad guys usually turn out to have misconceptions about the whole thing and come to an understanding later on. Stephen and Connie fuse on several occasions, showing that hetero relationships are just as normal and ok as same-sex.
The whole point of kids shows is to impart lessons onto children so they dont grow up being assholes. SU is probably the first show I've seen on mainstream television that deals with this kind of issue without making hetero/white people look like the villains.
Alright, it might not shove it down your throat but it just feels so saturated in it all that it feels like it. Some of the weirder stuff like how the Rock People episode opens up with the some of the phrasing they use, as well as Steven in drag in the Song for Sadie episode are all perplexing enough. But the show makes so many allusions to sex, and the relationships are all too touchy for a kids show. It's a lot more romanticized than something like Symbionic Titan (which also had an aggregious amount of sexuality in it) but I just think that sexuality and relationships are something that should really be played down in kid cartoons. Death and loss are something that children would realistically have to deal with (which is why Story for Steven is an awesome episode) but sex and romantic relationships should really be something directed more towards older kids or teens. Maybe what I'm really trying to say, is not that the morals are hamfisted but are more misplaced?
I see what you mean, but I think thats because the show is aimed for multiple audiences. I've got a younger brother who watches the show, and all the stuff about sexuality goes right over his head. Its meant for the older audiences, and even if it is picked up on by younger kids, I don't see the problem with teaching that people that are different from them aren't bad.
