| #88 - Still expensive as fuck. [+] (16 new replies) | 03/08/2013 on Money | -1 |
| Even the F-18/16/15 outmatch the fighters of most hostile countries. And you won't see any conventional wars in quite some time, it's all irregular warfare/guerilla warfare or civil wars. The enemy doesn't have planes, he has AK-47 rifles from the 80's and bombs made of plastic bottles filled with explosives. Threats like the Chinese, Iran, North Korea, Russia, and quite a few other countries all have air forces and air defense systems that would warrant using the F-35. North Korea literally threatened to launch pre-emptive nuclear attack against the US, and you're telling me there's no conventional threats left in the world.... Top brass and the Joint Chiefs of Staff know what the military needs, not you. Oh I knew you'd play the North Korea card. First off, Russia and China aren't gonna make trouble. Russia is busy with their own business and China gets a fuckload of money from ripping off the USA. Iran is pathetic. Now for North Korea, they don't have nuclear capabilites. They're not even a threat worth recognizing. They may have warheads and missiles, but no intercontintal nuclear weapons, and they're far from having them. Experts stated that we could maybe expect them to count as a nuclear power in 2016 or later. Also, their army is badly trained and equipped. They still drive around in ancient equipment and their leader is pretty much a retard. Even with their 1.2-1.5 million armed personnel, South Korea alone could kick their ass in an open conflict. Most probable reason for these "nuclear war threats" by North Korea is that they're trying to solidify their power upon their own population and project strength by threatening the biggest military warmachine on the planet. Yea, but the South Koreans are still woefully outnumbered, and they are going to need every last bit of help they can from us, especially if the think escalates and China gets involved. From a strategic point of view, the best way to get rid of large, concentrated numbers of enemy troops is with air power. China is lowering their relations to North Korea more and more. And they would not openly intervene in a conflict between the Koreas. That'd be idioitc. And one day, a war is going to break out between the US and China. It's inevitable. Given that we have mutual defense pacts with ROK, Japan, the Philippines, and even Australia, and given the fact that China is currently pissing everyone off, from the Senkaku Islands to the South China Sea, shit is going to hit the fan one day and these jets and the advantages they bring will mean the difference between victory and defeat. No China and the United States will not go to war. The Chinese economy is slowing down in growth, they are still dependent on US trade, and the Government would not risk the possible political destabilization that would come with a large scale war with the US. The Chinese government cares more about staying in power than control of the Senkakus or the South China Sea. Also mutual defense pacts only kick in if it is open warfare. A small skirmish between militaries without formal declarations of war from the respective countries would be irrelevant. Also as Ishalltroll stated, China would not intervene on NKs behalf. The Trade numbers from South Korea are too high. They want stability, and if NK were to destabilise the Korean peninsula, China would choke them of all resources. I don't want you to get the impression that I am against the F-35. I am for it, although its development process leaves me concerned. Especially given the low numbers of F-22s produced in total. Regardless stop trying to make it look like everyone is going to attack us. The only serious threat we have IMO is that of Iran, and that threat is only there because they might be able to cut off a huge amount of Oil shipments through the Gulf. Almost all current threats that would require the intervention of the F-35 can be solved non-militarily. If we look at the current military endeavors of the US, it involves surgical strikes in low-tech countries. Afghanistan, Iraq, Libya, Yemen, and maybe Syria soon. None of our peacekeeping missions seem to require the F-35 when a MQ-9 Reaper can do the same job, cheaper, and more safely. We need fifth generation fighters, but we must remember, we haven;t fought a conventional war in 60 years, and that is unlikely to change. If it does, I highly doubt that even 1000 F-35s will matter. We would need quality and quantity, if the russians can pump out more MIGs than an F22 can carry munitions, technology does little good. Still, the F-35 is both a great insurance policy and effective deterrent. And I agree with everything you said up to "Russia pumping out MiG's". Given that a MiG-29 costs around $40 million apiece and Russia's defence budget is only $60 Billion compared to almost $500 billion, I doubt that Russia can "pump out MiG's" I don't think russia can pump out migs either, it was an example of the fact that, if an enemy can manufacture aircraft fast enough, they can eventually become superior in the air. The German planes during WW2 were technologically superior to anything the Allies had. However you lose one hard to make plane and it hurts more than loosing hundreds of easy to make planes. Right now too, given are current resource suppliers, if we were to enter in a large war, we might have trouble acquiring the rare-earth elements required to build the high tech fighters. the F-15/16/18 would fare better in a conventional war IMO. The US wouldn't have to pump out planes if a large scale war broke out, they would only have to pump out munitions. The F-22 has a vastly greater standoff range than any other plane to date. It can carry twice the A/A munitions than the F-35 and control twice the effective airspace. Once air superiority is taken, F-35s will bombard hard targets with their greater attack capability with the protective overwatch of F-22s. Air superiority is a necessity. Since the German attack on Poland in 1939, no country has won a war in the face of enemy air superiority, no major offensive has succeeded against an opponent who controlled the air, and no defense has sustained itself against an enemy who had air superiority. Conversely, no state has lost a war while it maintained air superiority, and attainment of air superiority consistently has been a prelude to military victory. It is vital that national and theater commanders, their air component commanders, and their surface component commanders be aware of these historical facts, and plan accordingly.6 To be superior in the air, to have air superiority, means having sufficient control of the air to make air attacks on the enemy without serious opposition and, on the other hand, to be free from the danger of serious enemy air incursions. Of course, variations exist within the category of air superiority. | ||

| So what's it like? Are you aware of yourself? Or does it feel like no times has passed since you went into the coma? Or is it like sleeping? You're just gone mentally pretty much, it's like sleeping without dreaming and without being well rested when you wake up. And without waking up because of your surroundings. I personally felt of it like a day or so, when I missed a few weeks actually. No, but your subconscious mind reacts to things happening to you in little ways like a twitch of a finger or such. | ||
