Can't say much about benefits. I was diagnosed when I was 6 and reassessed in my early teens, but my parents didn't tell me until I was 19, so I didn't grow up with knowledge about it. I know my parents wanted to put me in special classes, but I was clearly happy and excelling where I was.
There are several things doctors look for, and if you exhibit enough traits you can be diagnosed. Both doctors agreed I 'technically' have it, but it's in a mild form.
One trait people tend to point to is being able to easily work out puzzles, with weak social skills to the point of being antisocial. I'm not antisocial, but I am always afraid of making a fool of myself in front of others. I try all the time to not let this get in my way of meeting people. I may not say much until I'm comfortable around someone, but I make up for this by being a good listener and understander.
Another 'benefit' is vivid selective memory, but only for bad stuff. It's like an over-clocked survival instinct constantly reminding you "Remember when you messed up? Don't do that again." It will stick with you for days over something you did over a decade ago.
I guess no matter how functional you are, it sucks unless you can find your niche and take control of your life.
