unfortunately we werent that resourceful....we used one of those big styrofoam blocks people put under their boat docks to help keep it afloat. it was a ~3x5 foot rectangle block. it took the entire thing to fill up one coffee can....to this day i do not see how any of us do not have severe burns from that. we were about as smart as 14 year olds that made their own napalm....

Imperial system is better for day-to-day use. It evolved more organically and its measurements correspond more or less to concepts we are inherently familiar with. I find it to be much more intuitive, especially when it comes to things like carpentry or cooking. An inch is my thumb width, a foot is roughly my foot, a yard is the height to my waist, I have those on me at all times. Plus, Imperial units are usually readily divisible into smaller portions, unlike metric units. It's much more convenient for mundane tasks, which is what most of us are using it for anyway.

Metric, of course, is much easier to work with for complex problems. Base-ten units are much easier to do math with. By like a lot. None of the conversions in Imperial follow any sort of pattern. If I'm working on an engineering problem, I'll do the whole thing in metric and convert it back to Imperial at the end again, I find Imperial values to be easier to make sense of than metric values .

TLDR: Imperial is better for hands-on work & general labor, metric is better for math-intensive work. Neither is inherently better than the other.

If you're doing carpenty, your shouldn't be guessing things. You're making a door and your thumb is an inch and a bit instead of an inch? Oops, your door doesn't fit the frame.

If America did decide to change we'de have to fucking change everyrthing. Changing the industrial machines to metric would be way too damn expensive. Thqat's why they don't want to change
#24 - anon (03/24/2014) [-]
As a CNC/CAD operator, i am here to tell you that 99% of machines are configured for the metric systems. The only time i have ever used the imperial system is if you are doing a house drawing. Don't get me started on civil engineering scales.

I think "human nature" itself is why. Regardless of whatever teachings we follow, we're imperfect beings. We have a lot of positive traits, but unfortunately there always going to be humans that are hateful, greedy, selfish, and violent.

No, since magnetism involves either ferromagnetic or electromagnetic objects interacting, and water can't be either of those.

is the above gif not happening because of surface tension ?

if so that would mean this action is due in part by IMF inter molecular forces , which is attraction and repulsion which is a magnetic property
User avatar
#146 - Kairyuka (12/21/2013) [-]
True attraction and repulsion is a property of magnetism. It's also a property of a dozen of other forces that involve a negative and a positive. Electrons' movements are also based on such principles, but we don't call that magnetism either

Well, did you know about it before?
Funny thing is, I don't know how I got to that Wiki page, I just stumbled across it while researching the spaceman and found it interesting, so I used it. I knew people would ask me about it once I put this out there.
