Okay. So why does that potential matter?

It's not like there's a baby hanging out in the future, experiencing life and thought, only to be killed because it was aborted months ago.

There's just an unthinking fetus. Aborting it doesn't hurt anything, not even the fetus. They don't have functioning nerve endings until late in their development.

It's like cutting down an oak tree, versus digging up an acorn that has just started to germinate. The oak tree has existed, interacted, grown, provided shelter and food, reproduced, etc. The acorn has the potential to do all these things, too. But it's just an acorn, it is not the same as the tree even though it could become one.

At 2 weeks the fetus shows vital signs. The medical definition of life. Just because it doesn't look like a baby yet doesn't mean it's not. Saying that its ok to kill it because it can't think, feel, or learn is the same as saying its ok to kill someone in a coma. The vital signs are there so they're alive, but they can't think, feel, or learn.

No the actual definition of life (on Earth at least) more or less comes down to cellular activity. All cells are alive at all times, technically no 'new life' is ever formed during sexual reproduction.

I never said a fetus isn't alive. Sperm and eggs are alive, Zygotes are alive, blastocysts are alive, fetuses are alive.
What I'm saying is, a fetus is not the same FORM of life as a baby, or a child, or an adult. In the same way you don't directly compare humans and other animals to bacteria, you cannot directly compare a fetus to a baby.

The reason we don't kill people in coma's is because they still have functioning brains, possibly with their personalities intact. A better comparison would be to a brain dead person, which we actually do pull the plug on once the diagnosis is received and proper procedures have been done. The reason for this is because we know that a person is a result of a functioning brain, and once the brain no longer functions, the person is gone.

In that sense, one could argue that a fetus is a pre-consciousness organism, just as a brain dead body is a post-consciousness one. It goes beyond the ability to think feel or learn, it is to say that consciousness, 'being' itself, is impossible within those bodies.

As such, to destroy those bodies does not harm any person. It is simply ending a non-conscious organism.
