Expose the flaws in the arguments before you call someone ignorant because you just shown your own weakness of not handling criticism and therefor are already losing the debate.

Factual statement:

Just because a minority of the 1.6 billion population of Muslims are vocal terrorists - does not mean those who hold these extremist, radical, and/or archaic beliefs are still a minority of the religious group. That is a myth established by apologists - as well over half (making it a majority,) hold archaic and radical beliefs that do not contend with modern society on a global level. They do not have to be terrorists to believe in the same sort of ideas that terrorists kill people for.

I'm a firm believer nothing should be safe from being made fun of, especially religion (any religion).
User avatar #84 - thelastamerican (01/14/2015) [-]
Unpopular opinion:

Get used to it man. If you're religious you can expect people to make fun of you for it. I've managed to come to terms with the fact that about a third of the people I meet are going to think that my religion is silly, and about a sixth of those people will openly ridicule me for it. Calm down and accept that some people are just asshats.
User avatar #106 - thatoneiranianguy (01/14/2015) [-]
People are not ass hats for thinking your religion is silly. There is plenty of open criticisms for religion out there - it only becomes reddit fedora - esque when they start attacking you as a person for believing in it, rather than your character itself.
User avatar #167 - thelastamerican (01/14/2015) [-]
That's what I was saying. The small percentage of people who you meet that feel the need to openly ridicule you for having a religion are ass hats though. Just let it roll off of you back instead of getting angry about it.

What's wrong with religion?
User avatar #110 - thatoneiranianguy (01/14/2015) [-]
Is it really necessary to answer that? I mean, honestly, you could write several books on that.

Well since we're on the topic of Islam - how about that religious institutionalism that supports death for apostasy?

Or how about the abuse of the rights of women and homosexuals in Islamic countries?

I seriously don't have to be this basic, you're being intellectually dishonest here to not have noticed the societal issues facing religious dogma.
#114 - blakeserene (01/14/2015) [-]
Mosy religions evolve beyond this. Often times they were implemented to help enforce and encourage procreation due to humanities somewhat tenuous population. By making women inferior and encouraging harems, it also created more offspring more quickly. Gays were prosecuted for much the same reason; sex that didn't result in children was seen as wasteful. Anal and oral sex were also often forbidden for the same reasons. In order to enforce such mandates, they had to have a zero tolerance policy (or death) in order to instill fear and law and order in times when such things were always one famine from breaking down. Is it perfect? No, but it worked for the times. However, most religions have changed with the times, getting rid of outdated doctrines and incorporating new ones, but the process is slow, just like any large organized system is slow to change.
User avatar #116 - thatoneiranianguy (01/14/2015) [-]
Key word being, "most," Islam has not in many nations.

And yes, you are right in these degrees, this is basic anthropology, such as polygamous acts in Mormonism (or even Islam) was to promote procreation of more individuals to be indoctrinated into the belief system from birth - however such justifications and explanations still do not void it from modern criticism. The fact is religion wherever it may be or whatever the religion may be still has influences that should stay behind one's home doorstep.

I have to leave, feel free to post more if you want and I can reply later in the day.
#173 - blakeserene (01/15/2015) [-]
I would argue that it does exempt religions that have evolved past these outdated doctrines from such criticism. Those religions have put the past behind them, and to judge them on things they have since ceased to practice isn't fair, just like calling Germans Nazis today, despite the fall of the Nazi party over 60 years ago. Judging any current group based on what their predecessors did is wrong. However, as you pointed out Islam still does those things, and in no way am I supporting them, simply pointing out that most other organized religions (and religion as whole) do change with the times.

Do you have any idea how many times Jesus Christ has been made fun of and was the target of jokes, cartoons, etc. And still is? Catholics/Christians/etc dont give a damn, they did before (like, 200 years ago) and they stopped doing it because it would have the opposite effect of what they tried to achieve.

Muslims should do the same with Muhammed. Maybe even make fun of him themselves and make/create funny cartoons about his achievements. Altough it is a bit harder since Muhammed had multiple children as wives, raided a city and overthrown a government in a country... Still source material for funny cartoons.

Humor/jokes and insults expose flaws and faults in Ideologies, that be Religion, Political ideologies and environmental hippie ideologies. This is why religious leaders and its people are afraid of this freedom. This is also the reason why we have this and why we keep using it. Not out of discrimination as many think.

Religion must not advance further than your own front door.

And most muslims DON'T kill other people because of it.
User avatar #70 - highhopes (01/14/2015) [-]
I'm Catholic and I love to joke about it, I think Muslims should show some more self-irony about their own religion. Just like Christianity, it is very very flawed.
#71 - anonymous (01/14/2015) [-]
All religions have great flaws, but Catholics and Christians seem to adjust to the flaws, interpeted them differently and continue to live with it, that is why religions over the past 50.000 years died, started, died, started, died, started, etc. The religions that currently inhabit the planet are all relatively young (with Islam being the youngest) so give or take a few hundred years and they will all be replaced by other religions again. 200+ years ago, if you made fun of Jesus christ, you would also be hanged/burned/killed etc. So Islam just needs to evolve like the other religions and everything will be fine again. Lots of Muslims I know simply dont care about their prophet being made fun off, so the process of evolving the religion Islam has already started in the west.
