Animals sometimes overpopulate areas and eat certain types of native plants into extinction (I can't remember the name of the case we were given, but it was about a species of goats left on an island a few hundred years ago that were eating a certain type of plant). Plants, especially vines, can grow over other plants and make it impossible for them to grow or even live, and those plants eventually take over. Animals kill each other and sometimes they don't eat or use every part of the corpse. The worst example was how orca (killer) whales will hunt grey whale calves, eat their tongues, then leave the corpses to rot as they sink to the bottom of the ocean.

It's a huge misconception that nature would keep itself balanced without us, and a lot of people actually help the environment (controlled burnings of forestry, re-introducing species to areas, hunting regulations, etc.).
