You basically just said that console exclsuives aren't on PC (Who knew right?) and are giving out about devs making a poor attempt at porting a game over to PC, which isn't a reflection of it's true power..

When Dark Souls first came to PC the modding community managed to make performance mods to bring it up to par

*TL;DR Making fun of fat people is not okay, but it is okay to let them die faster if it makes the minority of them falsely happy
User avatar #91 - zebanktoon (05/01/2014) [-]
We are all slowly dying, why not have fun while we're at it? If i wanna stuff my face and feel good then that's on me.
User avatar #92 - ihatem (05/01/2014) [-]
Because then you will be quickly dying while doing something that is only giving you the illusion of happiness. The things that you really want you are for fulfillment and you do hard things in order to reach that, you don't take the easy route to hard things to fill yourself in the literal sense. That's the illusion.
User avatar #93 - zebanktoon (05/01/2014) [-]

User avatar #116 - ihatem (05/01/2014) [-]
Although that anecdote goes for a lot of things, I actually legitimately doubt that "To each his own" is valid here unless under an extreme case. I mean it's biologically supported, with nutrients allowing better body function and liberty, and supported psychologically, with the pride in physical shape, and supported neurologically, with improved cognitive function and optimism. It really doesn't seem like something subjective here.
User avatar #176 - zebanktoon (05/01/2014) [-]
People are going to do what they want to do when it comes down to it.
User avatar #41 - idelki (05/01/2014) [-]
I mean, if they realize it's harmful but don't mind it because they'd rather enjoy all the food they're eating then meh, I don't care. Not going to force them to live a certain way. But it would be nice to avoid the majority of false happiness and people who think that it isn't doing any harm to them or society. Sure, maybe for some making fun of them will work as a reality check but most of the time it just makes them resist harder or make them feel as though they're in the right.

Not trying to get into the argument here, I'm just going to point out that the point you made is a fallacy.

yourlogicalfallacyis.com/burden-of-proof

Merry is just trying to stir shit up. As far as other's beliefs go: I agree with the notion that people should believe what they wish to as long as it doesn't hurt others, but remember that it is based on faith, not fact. The fact that you can't prove that there isn't a anaerobic koala living in the depths of a methane vent in some unreachable galaxy does not make the existence of it probable, it just means that it is my belief and nothing more.

This isn't to say that you shouldn't believe in things which haven't been proven, that is your choice, my point is simply that if someone takes the 'lack of evidence=no belief' stance the only thing you can earnestly respond with is 'well, I believe it and that's my choice'. Positive claim must support their thesis, not the other way around.
User avatar #65 - calawesome (03/24/2014) [-]
A man who claims he can run a mile in one minute-while the world's best athletes can't break the three-minute mark-has the burden of proving that he can do it.

Right now, about 90% of the world's population believes there is a Supreme Being. Plus, throughout known history-even back to the days of the caveman-humans have
believed in some sort of God. These points are enough to clearly establish theism as the normal state. It is therefore up to atheists to make their case for the deviation.

(Not my point, but relevant in this situation.)
User avatar #79 - ninjaroo (03/24/2014) [-]
Except that's not how it works.
If you believe something to be true, you should be able to demonstrate it. If you can't, I'm not obligated to agree.
This isn't based on how many people agree with you, or how smart the people that agree with you are. Whether or not it's reasonable to believe something depends on how many reasons you can give and how good those reasons are. In other words, evidence.
If you want, that can be our explanation for the deviation. We see the entire world agreeing on something, and when we ask "why?" no one gives us a decent reason.
User avatar #94 - calawesome (03/24/2014) [-]
Then the burden lies on both sides. On whomever is trying to convince the other. You say yourself in the second sentence. If I believe something to be true, then it's up to me to demonstrate it. If you believe something, then it's up to you.
User avatar #117 - nigeltheoutlaw (03/24/2014) [-]
It doesn't. Atheists are making a negative claim, and theists are making a positive. If I said that unicorns are real, it would be up to me to prove that claim, not up to you to disprove it. Additionally, one can't really prove a negative like that, since you would have to search the whole world throughout time in order to prove a claim wrong. The burden of proof still lies squarely on theists for claiming that god (or unicorns in my silly example) exist.
User avatar #185 - calawesome (03/25/2014) [-]
Disagree. If we were in a debate and it was about the existence of God, we would both need to put forward evidence that supports our claim.

I can walk up to an atheist and say "God exists." The burden of proof lies on me to defend my position. If he responds with, "No, God does not exist." then he has the burden of proof to defend that position. For the atheist to force the burden of proof to lie only on me, it would seem he has to remain silent? As soon as he asserts something, the burden of proof lies on him as well.
User avatar #186 - nigeltheoutlaw (03/25/2014) [-]
It holds true whenever you make a claim, not just if you're in a debate. If you claim to somebody "I believe unicorns exist", then you need to support your claim or the person is well within reason to not believe your claim.

You have a fundamental misunderstanding of what burden of proof is. I can't have a discussion with you on it if you don't even know it fully.
User avatar #187 - calawesome (03/25/2014) [-]
I agree. If I say that unicorns exist, then it IS up to me. But, if you say that you don't believe, you can't just say you don't believe and that be the end of it, you have to be willing to give reason why you don't believe. Hence, the burden is on those trying to assert their side of the argument.
User avatar #197 - klaes (03/25/2014) [-]
"I don't believe because you've given no evidence for your positive claim"

Is actually a perfectly valid reason to not believe in something.

#190 - nigeltheoutlaw has deleted their comment.
#189 - nigeltheoutlaw (03/25/2014) [-]
No, the burden is on a person making a positive claim since you can't prove a negative. If I say there is a tea kettle orbiting the sun somewhere that can not be observed by any means, the burden would be on me to prove it. If the burden on you was to disprove it, then it would be impossible to do as such, which is why burden of proof only applies to positive claims. As I said, you have a deep misunderstanding of this concept.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Russell%27s_teapot

This is an excellent example (from which I just borrowed) that will hopefully illustrate what I just said.

#43 - idelki (03/24/2014) [-]
Can't really argue with that.

I usually just say that when someone is being pretentious and arrogant on either side because those people irritate me to no end. Not to say it's full-proof or flawless but I still like to through that at people who feel they are so certain they are correct.

Nuuuu, not the Octavio files!

That's good to hear, though. Half way through my Junior year so collage stuff is stuff that I'll be thinking about. Have general ideas, but yeah still don't know what I'll do with myself after high school. Thankfully me and my girlfriend are still together and plan to do whatever together after high school which is a nice little safety net.

Also started working with Flash a bunch in my Graphic Arts class. Super fun, but scripting can be such an butthole.

Funny how your perspective on someone that you only know from the internet can be in reality different, just because of how people act on the internet. Remove the physical aspect of a conversation and your views on the person can easily change because you remove all predispositions and judgements you can have on a person. And I'll be honest, I had the initial thought that you were older than me x3
