Here's a thought anyone capable of purposely harming themselves, isn't functioning in a normal fashion. Even the ones that do it purely for attention have something wrong with them in the head.

But even things you consider "average" are all circumstantial, humans differ VASTLY in the way things affect us. Something that seems average to one, may be traumatic to others. It's all due to our different brain chemistry.
