We didn't tell them that it was believed to be gastrointestinal problems. We just walked in, said I had unbearable pain that wouldn't even let me stand up straight, and sat down for 4+ hours, never being tended to. I'm just happy my dad arrived in time, because I could have been there all night at that rate.

Well then the receptionist was an idiot or they weren't properly trained. They should have asked you about the pain on the spot and came to realize it was your appendix.

My appendix was rupturing when I was 12, and I had to wait in the ER for 4+ hours, and the only reason why they actually saw me was because my dad came in and flipped a shit after hearing how long I was waiting (he had just flown in from an overseas business trip and a family friend drove me there and waited with me). The doctor told me that if I had to wait any longer, my appendix would have ruptured and I could have died.

So that 30 minutes or less thing is complete bullshit, because I live in America.

Oh, but I did see a free clinic before that. They told me that it was just gastrointestinal problems and it would pass. My appendix was rupturing, and they told me to go home and wait for a fart.
User avatar #203 - swagloon (02/12/2014) [-]
Well you went to a free clinic. I had a scare like that when i was young; don't remember having to wait long, a doctor was already looking over me as soon as I was at the ER.
User avatar #235 - AnomynousUser (02/12/2014) [-]
I believe there was a misunderstanding... I went to the free clinic, they told me to go home, so I did. After a few hours, the pain was just getting worse, so we went to the ER and waited for 4+ hours (I don't remember because all I could think about was how bad the pain was). The free clinic misdiagnosed me, but they were almost immediately seeing me. The ER was the place that took so long.
User avatar #261 - iLime (02/12/2014) [-]
okay but if you listened to the free clinic you could have died. And these are recent statistics, they can differ for different hospitals because this is the national average. And if they knew it was an appendix problem they would have had you in there in less than 20 minutes. The fault was in the miss diagnosis that lead you to believe that it wasn't too major.

The problems with Canadian healthcare are endemic to Canada, not all UHC nations. Australian healthcare is pretty damn good from what I've heard.

HELLO CAPTAIN CAPS LOCK!!! YES HEALTH CARE IS PAID FOR BY TAXES BUT THE LONG WAITING TIMES ARE BECAUSE ANYONE CAN JUST GO INTO EMERGENCY WHEN THEY NEED IT! UNLIKE IN THE USA BECAUSE YOU HAVE TO PAY EACH TIME LESS PEOPLE GO SO WAIT TIMES ARE SHORTER!!! THAT MAY SOUND NICE BUT I HAVE SEEN PEOPLE GIVING THEMSELVES STITCHES USING WIRES TO AVOID PAYING HOSPITALS!
User avatar #262 - iLime (02/12/2014) [-]
WELL THE ER IS CALLED THE EMERGENCY ROOM FOR A REASON. ITS FOR FUCKING EMERGENCIES. AND WHEN YOU HAVE AN EMERGENCY 4 HOURS WAITING TIME IS NOT FUCKING ACCEPTABLE.

#75 - thewrasler (02/12/2014) [-]
The emergency room cannot turn you away if you can not pay. They will only keep you until you are stabilized enough to leave without coming right back. It sucks for those people, but they are not forced to decide between dying or having enough money for their family to pay rent.

tl;dr
Emergency rooms can't deny you care just because you're poor
User avatar #77 - Sataria (02/12/2014) [-]
huh. For the longest time I thought they would turn you away if you couldn't pay. Even a nurse in a Hospital yesterday was saying that.
User avatar #79 - thewrasler (02/12/2014) [-]
Legally the ER has to treat anyone who comes in that actually needs medical attention. You will be kicked out quickly if there is nothing seriously wrong with you. Also, the person still has to pay, but most places will work out a payment plan to fit the person's budget. For non-emergencies (such as getting the flu) the other parts of the hospital can turn you away if you can't pay, but will generally tell you where the nearest free clinic is.
User avatar #81 - Sataria (02/12/2014) [-]
(I'm just guessing you are from America) I think every other country has the wrong idea about how your health care works
User avatar #82 - thewrasler (02/12/2014) [-]
Good guess, and yes, they do. We don't just let poor people die or try to fix their broken arms by themselves. Even before Obamacare, there were forms you could fill out so that the state government would pay for your medical expenses. For minor illnesses, anyone can go to a free clinic (the wait time is usually very long because some people will go for the smallest reasons) if needed. Even homeless people are able to utilize these services (which they often do, though sometimes it's just to get a meal or to sit in a warm place).

It all depends on what you need treated, how serious your condition is, and what supplies are available.

Yes, waits can last as long as a month, but when that's the case you're likely on a list of about 30 people who also have the same ailment as you of varying conditions.

However, if you're in very serious condition (IE: you won't last another week without medical treatment) you're almost always jumped to the front of that line.
User avatar #81 - kinginyellow (01/23/2014) [-]
Ya as long as you don't need instant care. They won't deny somebody with immediate heart problems or in need of surgery these long waits. There's also a lot more accident prevention done in Canada to stop time being wasted on injuries by people who were being idiots. If you got a gash in your hand, you're perfectly capable of getting it clean and wrapped without a doctor, at least that's the case here. Educate yourself.
