I don't mean to get on your case about him, but I think the Fourth is probably the biggest jerk in the series, or at least the most absent minded. And that's saying something.

Didn't bother keeping his eye on his students during a war, didn't keep Rin and Kakashi marked after Obito died so he could teleport to them at any time, jumped on Orochimaru's toes on the race to become the Hokage though that was Orochi's fault for the most part... Threatened the entire world by impregnating Kushina and didn't have the sense to think someone might know about it and try to mess with it, especially with the Uchiha clan being a known threat.

And then he decided to put the Kyuubi in his kid instead of just letting Kushina die with it when she was already half dead. No prep warning either and it was clear he had something in mind after studying the Dead Demon Seal. But no, his kid just suffered for like 16 years until he pulled himself out of the crap the Fourth left him in.

I dunno. Something about him is just so... lame? Sorry, I don't really mean to get on your case, or anything. Just thought I'd put my opinion of the Fourth there.

wow, i feel like most of that should have been in a spoiler. i didn't make it that far into naruto to find out who his parents are yet, but shit.
#143 - bluemagebrilly (07/18/2014) [-]
Sorry, though all of the info I said has been out for a year, if not more.

#144 - jacksipian (07/18/2014) [-]
it's still a spoiler. regardless of how long it's been around because not everyone has reached that point. New people get into new things every day, but because they're new, you get to ruin plot twists and stuff for them?
#147 - bluemagebrilly (07/18/2014) [-]
... Uh, no, but if you're not caught up with something, you should know not to read comments or anything related to what you're watching. That's more or less part of the internet 101. Things /will/ be spoiled for you if you aren't caught up.

It may be a spoiler, but you could say the same for anything, really.

Like did you know Goku is a Saiyan and has a kid, along with a brother? That's like, I dunno, 20 years old, but hey! Spoiler.
User avatar
#148 - jacksipian (07/18/2014) [-]
actually, that's the first episode, i wouldn't call first episode a spoiler because if you haven't started it you don't care, and if you have started it you know that.
#149 - bluemagebrilly (07/18/2014) [-]
What if you wanted to watch it but hadn't yet? That's the biggest twist in the first episode!

But... Nothing is spoiled if you don't read comments. Like you didn't need to read anything I said after realizing I was going to talk about the Fourth.
User avatar
#153 - jacksipian (07/18/2014) [-]
i didn't know there was anything special about the forth, that's the thing. i didn't know enough about him to realize that reading about him was going to spoil anything. And with DBZ if you haven't seen it you don't know what a Saiyan is so you're curious about that and you might be curious to know more about the brother, so you go and watch it and that's not really spoiled. a big spoiler would be saying Vegeta came to Earth with the intention to get Kakarot and Radditz back and destroy it but then after getting his ass kicked and seeing Goku's power on Namek he went back to earth and started fighting alongside the good guys until he betrayed everyone and went back to killing innocents after Babidi gave him the power to go Super Saiyan 2 where he might finally be able to beat Goku
#154 - bluemagebrilly (07/18/2014) [-]
So it's okay to spoil something if you're ignorant about the situation and the words, but I spoil something about the fourth, when you're ignorant about the situation and the words, and it's a bad thing? Too much double standard right there.

#155 - jacksipian (07/18/2014) [-]
You talked about how he put the Kyuubi in the kid, I've seen enough of the show to know what the Kyuubi is and who it's inside of, I'm not ignorant to the situation or the words, but it kind of ruined a bit of it.
#157 - bluemagebrilly (07/18/2014) [-]
I know what a brother is and that Goku was an only child from watching Dragon Ball, which came before Dragon Ball Z.

Spoilers. (>' ')>
User avatar
#158 - jacksipian (07/18/2014) [-]
actually you don't know that he's an only child, you just know he grew up with Gohan after being found alone and crying in a forest. hearing that he has a brother could make you think about he previous family and why they abandoned him and stuff. not a major spoiler, it actually just raises more questions
#159 - bluemagebrilly (07/18/2014) [-]
I'm not even going to bother. You're just being rude at this point, too much of a double standard on how you feel about 'spoilers.'

They picked a secret place under the protection of the village and the strongest ninja in the world. Pretty sure he "considered" someone coming to it. Who thinks of and prepares for a guy who can teleport?

Teleport guy gets away, he leaves half (because Naruto couldn't handle the whole) of the largest chakra source in the world for his son to stop the guy in the future who will obviously cause trouble.

P.S. his planning ahead works.
#142 - bluemagebrilly (07/18/2014) [-]
The 3rd's wife was there, along with a medic and Kushina, so it wasn't /that/ secret. Sure, he couldn't have expected the teleport guy, but /he/ could teleport, so why not put up seals that only let people with his chakra signature into the room? He was a seal master, so it's viable.

Minato also wasn't as strong as the third, in my opinion. Just a master of space time ninjutsu. But his 'planning ahead' wasn't that great. He had time to write a note or create a Shadow Clone to tell people about the 'teleport guy', but he didn't. Not to mention the fact he had the Dead Demon Seal in the first place meant... maybe he /wanted/ the Kyuubi to get into his kid from the start.

His planning ahead sort of worked, but only because Kishi doesn't know how to write a solid plot. Like why would he not tell Sarutobi about the guy who murdered his wife and let the Kyuubi free?

The reason there are so few is to spread information as little as possible. Keep vital information to a select, trusted few. He is acknowledged as the strongest of that generation by multiple powerful leaders in direct dialogue (such as the Raikage and the third) and there is no way the room did not have any type of seals but in the series not a single seal has proven effective against Tobi's teleportation so there isn't a point arguing whether or not any were in place.

The village was close enough to respond to any threat and knowing that he forces the 9Tail to attack the village so it is just Minato and Kushina (a pregnant ninja).

Your are just really bitter at him for no reason. I don't even like him much. I felt like he was a flat character but you are trying to make flaws where there weren't really flaws.
#185 - bluemagebrilly (07/18/2014) [-]
I am not bitter for no reason, these are pretty vital reasons. He's supposed to be the leader, the Fourth Hokage. But he put his whole village at risk by getting Kushina pregnant and it wasn't that secret of an area if Obito not only knew about it, despite having never been there that we know of, and knew that Kushina had the Kyuubi in her. I wasn't saying he should have a seal to keep Obito from entering, he had no way of knowing after all, but he should have had one that alerted him that something was trying to get into the room.

He knew space/time Jutsu, and he wasn't dumb enough to think he was the only one.

Being recognized as 'strong' isn't the same as being wise or smart, just good at fighting, though. He was chosen as the Fourth because he put his friends first and because he was strong, not because he was that smart. Plus the only other choice was Danzo or Orochimaru, both of which were rather corrupted.

Not trying to sound bitter about the character, but the flaws are there... Although, they're more so plot flaws than character ones, since Kishi /needed/ the Kyuubi to escape, but didn't know how to set it up.

You said it yourself in the last line, it is bad writing and plot holes. Pinning them on MInato is irrational.
#189 - bluemagebrilly (07/18/2014) [-]
It isn't irrational since they were done by him..? Yes, Kishi wrote it, but no matter what he did, Kishi would have written it. That doesn't make much sense.

That's like not blaming Madara's character for being crazy, when he was written that way.
User avatar
#191 - IamSofaKingdom (07/19/2014) [-]
Crazy is a trait within the character. It is his personality and confined to him specifically. Complaining about seals, having a baby, not preparing against a man who can teleport literally anywhere (who has also not shown himself before that and forced the strongest chakra being to fight on his behalf) are story elements that you complain about directly towards Minato's character. That is irrational.

The only thing you complained about that was within the confines of Minato himself was his decision to seal up half the fox in his son and that worked out positively for the ninja world in every way.
#193 - bluemagebrilly (07/19/2014) [-]
Minato's character was designed to be super powerful, but with Naruto's absent mindedness. He was 'said' to be a genius, but he didn't show those traits at all... And no, what I said was him sealing the Kyuubi into his child was horribly planned. It wasn't a good idea, and definitely wouldn't have worked out if Kishi was a good writer and kept with the plan he wrote at the beginning.

It isn't irrational, because he did it. It's more irrational to ignore what /should/ or /could/ have happened, because it's all within the realm of possibility and not exactly explained on why certain things didn't happen.

Barry has always been faster than Clark. Anything that made it out otherwise was made by people who probably didn't know the source material.
