Women's studies is almost entirely an academic pursuit, so there isn't really a "practical application" in any traditional sense. The most that can be said for a practical use of a women's studies degree is (hopefully) allowing a graduate to understand information or a problem as it relates to women specifically. This can actually be pretty useful when it comes to fields such as psychology, history, archaeology, sociology, statistics, civil engineering and plenty more. However, if someone is hoping to solve problems with women in mind, it is still much more reasonable to major in a more directly related field to the problems they want to solve instead of women's studies.
In short, there is value in what "women's studies" is supposed to be, but not much of that value transcends the purely academic world.

Its nice to see a serious and polite response I wish more people would do the same.
#20 - anonymous (07/06/2014) [-]
To answer that question: Women's studies is similar to these courses:
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/African-American_studies / en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Asian_American_Studies / en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Native_American_Studies
but mostly en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gender_studies All these courses explore the role and influence of their subject (women/gender/African Americans/etc.) in different fields, like history, science, literature, art, politics, and so forth.
Pratical applications outside teaching are mostly consulting and counseling when it comes to the situation of women in different environments, for example the working world, in poltitics, the media, but also "even" advertising, PR, marketing, development of products for women and (toys) for girls. Teaching, though, is an important application too, just like in history or philosophy.
To say there is no point is simply childish.

why is there no WHite STudies
I'd like my degree in white studies because it is actually worth studies
#138 - anonymous (07/07/2014) [-]
There are white studies. All studies are white studies, because any field is defined from the perspective of white people.

Fucking people honestly saying this is bait. People who have no real life experiences and spend their entire day on the internet with nothing but tumblr as their reference for what feminism actually is. If these people think that women, whether on a worldwide or local scale, are completely equal to men, then I have honestly lost hope for humanity.
#6 - anonymous (07/06/2014) [-]
Aren't you four guys here in this thread so far a hate group?
#8 - anonymous (07/06/2014) [-]
So women's studies teach that some people would be inferior animals that need to die? What people are they refering to?
#107 - anonymous (07/07/2014) [-]
You assume that women's studies teaches "feminism". The views of radical and even violent feminists might be subject to the course, but are not being promoted. It's like assuming history promotes the views of Hitler because it teaches them.
#9 - enkmaster (07/06/2014) [-]
Women's studies classes teach women that nothing is their fault and the blame for all problems are to be placed on men. It teaches them legal technicalities that can get man arrested for so much as accepting an offer for a ride. not offering, but accepting one from a women. This, in turn, facilitates the belief that women are superior to men, which paints lines, cultivates an "us vs them" mentality, and creates hatred. Spend 15 minutes reading a feminist forum, and count how many times you ready "all men", "men are evil" "men should die" etc etc. You'll be in the double digits far before the halfway point.
#10 - anonymous (07/06/2014) [-]
How do you know that women's studies classes teach these kind of things?
Is there no difference between radical feminists (aka feminazis) on the internet and the professors that teach women's studies?
Can you please link me to a thread in a forum where the things you describe are going on?
#93 - anonymous (07/07/2014) [-]
go to reddit feminism or such

#12 - anonymous (07/06/2014) [-]
So you claim to have inside knowledge that I can't reproduce and no link.
The usual, that's why I believe you're a member of a hate group and not at all "discussing".
#13 - enkmaster (07/06/2014) [-]
I gave you a link. Simply because it isnt in the form of a hyperlink and may actually require some effort on your part doesnt mean its non-existent. It means you dont want to look it up.
And how, exactly am I supposed to prove what I've heard from the people who have actually taken the classes?
And, just a quick question, do you even know what a "hate group" is? A hate group is a group of people dedicated to hatred. Hurting, working against another, more broad group of people unjustly simply because they have a biased view and blame the problems affecting them, their family and society on a group of people simply because they want to. They hate, they enjoy hating, and they want to hurt people because of this. I dont hate feminists or feminism in general. Do I disagree with them? yes. Do I feel that what some of them say and do is wrong? Of course. Do I hate them? No. Ergo, I am not part of a hate group.
#14 - anonymous (07/06/2014) [-]
You gave me no link, you claim I would find something there. There is not the thing you describe. You can't prove what you heard from your people and I don't believe you.
A hate group is a group of people that collectively hates a certain something, in this case feminism. That means you hang out together and denigrate all things feminism. You claim you don't hate, and again, I don't believe you. I don't believe you because you cannot produce facts that support your statements, which is why I chose to believe the foundation of your statements is an emotion. Hate. Or, if it makes you feel less attacked, a deep seated resentment.
#15 - enkmaster (07/06/2014) [-]
Have I said anything that proves I hate feminism? Have I said that feminist should die, or be punished in some way? No. Nothing I've said comes anywhere close to hateful. At worst, It shows that I disagree with their ideology. By operating on the things I have outlined, claiming that I hate them is a knee-jerk reaction and reading far too deep into words that were never meant to be interpreted in such a way. Claiming I hate them is like claiming that straight-path people hate drinkers; they may disagree with them, but that does not necessarily mean hate and assuming such is false.
If we've decided to operate on guess and hunches, as you are with you're assumption that I "hate" them (despite at no point saying that I do or saying anything that be considered hateful), then I am going to choose to believe that you're apparent fascination with my non-existent hate stems from a pre-existing emotional bias towards the desire to prove me wrong, thus rendering anything I say meaningless to you anyway.
Anyway, I see that this conversation isnt going to go anywhere significant, and I dont feel like arguing semantics with strangers over the internet. Have a good day.
#17 - anonymous (07/06/2014) [-]
You said that women's studies - a regular course on universities across the world - would turn students into member of a "glorified hate group". Particularly because you act so sensitive to the term "hate", it must have a deep meaning to you, so your use in reference to students of a regular program of study, shows that you have a deep seated emotional resentment.
I do indeed have a pre-existing opinion about people like you, but it is nothing emotional, but the result of a considerable field study. You behave like dozens of people I have interviewed before, and after I confronted you with my impression, you as well do nothing to convince me either otherwise or of the legitimacy of your hate for feminism.
Finally: If you don't feel like arguing semantics, maybe you should not spend all your time with that and just that and instead provide me with some hard facts that support your opinion. A simple link, for example, to those double-digits of hateful comments on feminist forums.

"Spend 15 minutes reading a feminist forum, and count how many times you ready "all men", "men are evil" "men should die" etc etc. You'll be in the double digits far before the halfway point."
A simple link could prove that. But it is not provided. That makes me stupid and blind?
#146 - anonymous (07/07/2014) [-]
Dude, dumbass.... go to Tumblr, type in #Feminism like the motherfucker said, and read. I can't tell if you're bait or serious but holy shit, I can't believe I'm hoping you're bait.

Yes it does. He gave you directions. You can't say that you can't get to your destination just because you got directions and not a ride there. Additionally, all that makes you lazy too.

To be able to somehow tie men to every problem you'll ever encounter, thus freeing yourself from any responsibility.
Something in your life not going the way you want? It's definitely mens fault, no way it could be yours.
