They could actually build aircraft carriers and subs if they wanted, problem is they would never get building them through the Bundestag.
Germany is very serious about keeping their defense forces defense only. Aircraft carriers and nuclear subs are long range attack forces.

Shooting ourselves in the foot? we import more from Europe from we export, it's more in Europe's interest to keep trading cost down than it is for us, plus ever heard of the commonwealth? we'd be better off without Europe aka Germany dictating to us who we can trade with. I for one can't wait till Europe implodes so we can gain our independence back.
#55 - Absolute Madman (05/18/2015) [-]
commonwealth? gl trading, faggots, you really did a good job for the last 200 years, nothing remaining in "great britian" except financial sector

despite that, scotland will declare indepentent once GB leaves europe, only reason they didn't leave was because of financial worries (EU didn't assure scotland to remain in Europe if they seperate)

sorry for grammar and everything

p.s. we won't miss you

Woah there cowboy slow down

First off, the french front national is a disgrace that'll never get any majority in Parliament. In fact, even moderate center right is having a hard time. They're the butt of the joke and in the 2002 the moment the leader climbed the polls the whole of the country voted for the opposition (so Chirac), a landslide of 82% which was never seen before in history. France as a population hates the FN, even other right wingers stay away from those Tea Party-ish crazies.

Secondly, it's the reunification of Germany that was the stepping stone to Germany's success. Merkel can rather be attributed the prowess of consolidating european economic regionalism which with France and other countries' participation partly blocked the tidal wave of the 2008 crisis.

Finally, the major error from the Conservatives here is rather the repeal of the Human Rights Act (Blair's better achievement from a juridical perspective), the exiting of the European Convention of Human Rights and Cameron's pipe dream of a British Bill of Rights, which, in the hands of the brit parliament and with the interpretation from UK courts, will most likely not maintain the same quality of human rights.
#45 - fuarkthisplanet (05/17/2015) [-]
Are you mentally retarded? the Human Rights Act was a disaster, we can't deport rapists from Somali because they have "rights to a family life", ECONOMIC refugees come over and claim benefits for a family of 12 when natives are starving or dying. The British Empire was the largest and most successful in human history and you don't think we can run ourselves? our Magna Carta set the standards when it came to equality, even America based it's bills on it.
User avatar #85 - herecomesjohnny (05/18/2015) [-]
Actually a large part of the writers ofthe ECHR were british lawyers so it's still running yourself
#56 - Absolute Madman (05/18/2015) [-]
magna carta was transferring political power from the king to british noblemen, not much about human rights there

"The British Empire was the largest and most successful in human history and you don't think we can run ourselves?"
most successful? by what standards? owning wide under-developed area's for a very short period of time wouldn't classify a realm as "successful" ... and furthermore, how long did you maintain that ?
No, watching developement in britain i doubt, that you can "run" the remaining shit you got.

go, leave europe, noone misses you

"No free man shall be seized or imprisoned, or stripped of his rights or possessions, or outlawed or exiled, or deprived of his standing in any other way, nor will we proceed with force against him, or send others to do so, except by the lawful judgement of his equals or by the law of the land." Ye it has fuck all to do with human rights ay?

"By what standards?" "owning wide under-developed area's"

Do you even history cunt?

That's what they said with the third reich. Don't get too cocky or those French "fascists" and British morons will have to teach you a lesson again. And I don't think America will be so hesitant to enter the war the third time around.
User avatar #91 - galanorth (05/18/2015) [-]
Ever heard of the House of Habsburg? Or the HRE? Yeah, It isn't too far fetched to say that a bunch of Germans are capable of being a European powerhouse for hundreds of years.

Seriously, while Germany is a weapons exporter comparable with China in numbers and -in certain fields- to the US in quality, the German Army is mostly woefully underequipped. Except for certain special forces, the Bundeswehr doesnt compare well. Plus, Germany is not allowed to have Aircraft carriers, nuclear subs or, well, nukes. Just because they tried to rule the world, talk about holding a grudge...
#29 - angelusprimus (05/17/2015) [-]

It's 33.0 ft in diameter which translates to 10.0584m. Seems rather odd to put that extra 5.84 cm on there if you're designing it in metric units.

His name's Conrad Schumann. I believe he was able to jump across because they haven't even made the wall at this time. After the Berlin Wall collapsed, he stated that it was the first he truly felt free. Unfortunately, he commited suicide in 1998 by hanging in Bavaria. They even made a memorial statue in his honor. Pic related.

I would really like to go and see it myself, and also the remaining segments of the Berlin wall.
User avatar #32 - gabemczombie (04/21/2015) [-]
According to my history teacher, he comitted suicide due to the fact that his family was still on the other side, and they all perished.
User avatar #20 - listerthepessimist (04/21/2015) [-]
given how he checked out, it's a bit harsh to put him on a pole like that
#22 - omahooha (04/21/2015) [-]
Never been to Berlin but that's not the only memorial they have for him. There seems to be a ton of street art dedicated to him around the city. Which I think this one is pretty neat.
