All this does is screw over people without college attending children, at the benefit of people who have college attending children.
We're just shuffling the burden.
I'm not sure why that's somehow *better*. You've got people who don't have college degrees, who work hard at shit jobs, and you want to raise taxes another $1,181 each year so their future competition can go to college for free. Then, in five years, instead of getting that promotion to store manager, it's going to go to someone who got to attend school for free.
And, of course, once the schools are free - that's going to introduce a whole new slew of problems. Right now, some students actually care about their finances. They shop around. I looked at teh cost of tuition *before* I selected a college.
If it's all free - why would anyone care that College A is $2k per semester cheaper. That's $16k over four years. If it's free - right - how do you allow colleges to charge different amounts. They'll have *NO* motivation to reduce costs, they'll just bill the government.
They already have very little motivation because government backed student loans, but this will just make it even worse.

So you're saying, that those people who work hard at shit jobs, who now have free access to college will decide NOT to take advantage of the opportunity to get a degree and therefore a better job? And thereby increase their income dramatically? To top it off, the tax plan drawn up would increase taxes that primarily affect people who make more than 50k a year, which means no extra burden goes onto those working low to minimum wage jobs. How is that unfair?

Take a 30-something Mom with two kids working full-time as a waitress. Maybe she's an assistant manager and bring in 45k a year.
Now Bernie comes along with 'free college'.
Big deal. Free classes aren't going to pay her rent or buy food for her kids. She's barely getting by on 45k. She can't afford to go to college unless you make tuition free *and* pay her 45k. It'll never happen.
But more importantly, and honestly - even if you disagree with me about Bernie, just focus on this. Because it's true. The value of a college education is directly related to how many people have it. Stop and think about that for a second. If everyone in the US had a bachelors degree in something - do you think everyone would have a sweet office job paying 120k? The answer is no. The more people that have a degree, the higher the requirements will be when hiring. College used to be a way to set yourself apart from the rest of the hiring pool. If EVERYONE goes to college, that doesn't do anything for anyone.
The more people go to college, the less dramatic the value of a college degree will be. The world isn't unicorns and sunshine, sadly.

so is that what happened in Europe? Everyone got a degree and now jobs suddenly don't pay more than those that don't require degrees? And honestly, plenty of people work full time raising kids and going to school. It's not easy, but its been done. I know one girl who worked two jobs, raised her son, and went to school part time. She just got her degree last semester. Its not easy to advance yourself. It takes a lot of work and sacrifice, but at the end of the day, only the individual can decide to do it. By making higher education free, it helps ease the burden, if even just a little.

Yes - it has happened in Europe.
It's happened in the US too.
The more people who attend college, the less value a college education has.
