well since you asked. just help people and you'll be fine. I personally don't follow a religion. good people don't need it.

No, my statement isn't aimed at the concept of enjoying life. I personally am not happier doing anything other than helping people. Your statement was, "our only purpose is to enjoy life". If our only reason to exist is to enjoy ourselves, that is hedonism.

If you are arguing from a theistic perspective than sacrifice is part of every religion. The only major worldview that would be in line with the notion that we exist only to enjoy life would be atheism and even that carries the notion that we have an obligation to advance mankind.

Ok, first of all you keep acting like I am basing these ideas off of your comment of something. They are based off of the contents of the bible. Everything in that book is very specifically aimed only at us. The implications of other sentient life challenges the notions and actions depicted in the bible. I referred to your comment only because you suggested otherwise.

Second, there isn't anything "black and white" about the reasoning, I am pretty sure you just have no idea what I am talking about conceptually.

Last, Hedonism is "enjoying life" and Christianity isn't Hedonism, in fact it often dictates the opposite. The lessons in the bible constantly warn you that the life of an upright and righteous man is riddled with strife. Jesus Himself is the ultimate example of that.
User avatar #199 - hinochi (02/14/2015) [-]
Ah yes, the Bible. The same Bible that has had centuries worth of human input. And of course it's aimed at us. We wrote it after all. Sure it might have been God telling us to write it, but He knows concepts we can't wrap our minds around.

I will concede this point as you are probably right.

Finally, if the way someone enjoys life is by helping people, is it still Hedonism?
You're going off an assumption of what I mean when I say enjoying life. I'm not talking about partying every day. That's not enjoying life, that's just having a good time. Enjoying life is taking time to stop and smell the roses.

That would imply that we are the only ones with purpose then. Why would a God such as the biblical one create life without purpose? We were given His son as a sacrifice for heaven. It is such a momentous action to take, do you suggest he just copy pasted it on every world? That would demean it. If he didn't it means that for some reason we are the only important or privileged beings in existence.

Their existence creates an seemingly insurmountable amount of problems to dogma.
User avatar #197 - hinochi (02/14/2015) [-]
Actually, it wouldn't imply that at all. Nothing I said previously would imply that. And our purpose isn't a definite thing either. Until we know what it is, we an only guess.
Another thing. I never said the life on other worlds is the same as ours. When I say "experimented" I mean made non-human sentient life. It would only demean it if we were narcissistic in our beliefs.
The existence of other beings doesn't make anything null and void. That's black and white reasoning.
And frankly, I personally believe our only purpose is to enjoy life.

Didn't they already have a female Deadpool before any of this shit?
#24 - anonymous (02/13/2015) [-]
Yeah but I can accept that in Deadpool's case because his being male isn't a defining trait, it's his batshit insanity, something that anybody can have, so I won't complain about it.

Compare that to what they did in this comic. Thor is a mythological figure from Norse folklore, and is explicitly stated in those myths to be MALE.

What's the difference? Deadpool is his own character, Thor is a public domain character that Marvel turned into a superhero - you can't just change shit to pander to people.

Yes, but alternative Deadpools are a thing. Hell, there's a pandapool. In one series, he murders all the other Deadpools.

It wasn't about the Big Bang, it was about the sentient life around the galaxy. The Christian faith crux's on the fact that we are the people molded after God's image and that He took actions to save us. If that is really the case, how would other sentient races be explained?
User avatar #195 - hinochi (02/14/2015) [-]
And who's to say He didn't experiment with other planets and other life? We might be the only ones made in His image, but that doesn't mean he didn't make other sentient life.
