That's not what you said, you said "the Japanese have much better voice actors and directors" which is a bold assertion. If you meant that there exist some better dubs in Japan then that's true, but there also exists good voice acting and directing in English. Avatar, in my opinion, is an example of this.
#17 - mattymc (07/08/2014) [-]
Im sure there are. And i apologize, your phrasing seemed to imply different. Frankly i cannot understand why someone would take a medium that exists in their native language and want it translated to another only so it can be translated back in text.

If you consider high pitch squeaking and lots of overacting good..

There are sooo many bad voice actors that people like because they speak Japansese, it's ridiculous. Can you mention a single Steve Blum of Japan? I like Nana Mizuki, but she's no Steve Blum.

The reason that you think Japan has better voice acting is because of the amount of Anime produced by the country compared to relatively small dubbing companies in the US. Due to the success of the anime media, there are more studios and networks that are willing to professionally pay the expenses and hire the right actors in Japan.

You are likely comparing it to dubs. Dubbing in Western countries is much less important than original animation which comes with original voice acting. Thus, dubbing of foreign media is more often carried out by small companies such as Funimation studios.
One setback in dubbing is costs: due to the much smaller scale compared to original programs and lower likelihood of dubs reaching commercial television, experienced voice actors for dubbing productions are generally more difficult to find
Another setback would be editing: Due to apparent differences between Japanese language and cultural ideology compared to Western culture and the English language, certain exclamations and tones have to be translated into English and are often perceived as silly; With the range of cultural differences networks often take generalized audience preferences very seriously and would threaten to cancel shows based on premise alone before even airing.

Avatar was produced by and owned by a large scale network
Thus, with the help of Nickelodeon Studios they were able to properly hire professional voice actors with experience.
There is a reason that Pixar, Disney, Warner Bros etc; aren't shitty. It's because they're serious large scale studios. These studios are much much more famous than any anime studio in terms of directors or actors.
User avatar #57 - sketchE (07/08/2014) [-]
in their own language yes. but thats like saying that the female voice actor for commander shepard would be better than jennifer hale.(if the even do that) the reason avatars dubbing is better than a lot of anime dubs is because it was written in english. the language difference means a lot. as much as i hate saying it the inflections match the animation which may not cross over well

"better voice actors"
Sorry but 99% of Japanese anime is dudes that sound like chicks.
User avatar #24 - ponieskilledmyacc (07/08/2014) [-]
Okay, can't really read that and stay silent.
They certainly look like chicks, but voice acting there is so respected for a reason.
When something is popular, it gets better (kinda like sports) and voice acting is probably more popular than actual acting in Japan, so they got really good at it.
User avatar #253 - kinginyellow (07/08/2014) [-]
So have English voice actors, it's not obscure or unpopular here. People just can't look past anime and look at the things actually given a big budget in Western animation. Pixar and Disney overshadow anime dubs in terms of money, so they make sure to hire professionals. You can't tell me voice actors like Mark Hamill and Nolan North aren't respected as much as Japanese voice actors are, the problem is looking at the same medium in different countries instead of the most popular form of animation in each.
User avatar #309 - ponieskilledmyacc (07/08/2014) [-]
Oh, no, no, I never said Japanese voice-acting is superior to American, nor I meant to say it's better to watch Avatar in Japanese, I just couldn't let the guy say shit about one of the best voice acting in the world(tied with American and Brazillian in my humble opinion).
User avatar #310 - kinginyellow (07/08/2014) [-]

That's an opinion tho. I could say America has better voice actors, with Steve Blum, Troy Baker, Grey DeLisle, and few more.

#9 - mattymc (07/08/2014) [-]
That's a bold assertion. But it's irrelevant because Avatar is an American show, written in english therefore there is no logical reason for subbing a show that already exists in that language except for the deaf.
#295 - anonymous (07/08/2014) [-]
Well, to be fair, it was animated in korea.
#160 - anonymous (07/08/2014) [-]
there is plenty of reasons, for example if they want to learn language, that is why i watch shows in english but with my national subs to fully understand, even when the dubs are done already
#12 - kanedam (07/08/2014) [-]
it is an official job there and has a school/education behind it. if i remember correctly voice acting school lasts three years there. no other country has such serious voice acting.
User avatar #245 - kinginyellow (07/08/2014) [-]
Uh, look at DIsney or Pixar. They take good care to make sure they have professionals doing the voices, look at some of their voice actors. That and there's video games, look at people like Nolan North, Troy Baker, Michael Mondo, ect. In the medium of anime there isn't that much professionalism in the West because anime isn't as big of a market to sink a lot of money into, but the big budget animated films made here are done by getting professionals.
#256 - kanedam (07/08/2014) [-]
yes they are good doing their own works. because they have their own studio for that. no argueing about that point.they are doing well in their own works, on their own language. but often the translations suck... and normal movies and series (not just anime) generally suck too compared to the original sound. (exception are american movies dubbed german)
User avatar #257 - kinginyellow (07/08/2014) [-]
Well ya the problem is if you look at just anime, of course Japan dominates because of their country having more money in the industry compared to North America. Our money is in Pixar/Disney, or live action.
#258 - kanedam (07/08/2014) [-]
its not only about anime.
also normal series, movies and so on have a very bad level of voice acting usually. especially when it comes to translating...
User avatar #259 - kinginyellow (07/08/2014) [-]
Well ya, I've seen a couple trailers for English dubbed Japanese movies. That I kinda say shouldn't even be done, because trying to match a real person's lips is just gonna be a massive pain in the ass.
#262 - kanedam (07/08/2014) [-]
once more... i am not just talking about japanese.
i'm austrian so i listen to german dubbed stuff.
and its usually very badly done. also the american works, japanese and so on. no matter which, a lot of them suck generally to be honest.
no matter if anime, cartoon, movie, series, and so on... the emotions usually are much flatter and the general "feels" are conveyed much worse.
User avatar #264 - kinginyellow (07/08/2014) [-]
Ya, it'd be like showing Corner Gas in Germany. You'd have to remove half the jokes because no one outside of Canada, or at least without the knowledge behind the jokes, would get it. It'd just look weird.
#266 - kanedam (07/08/2014) [-]
yep.
and it is often that the voices simply dont fit the characters. you know, arrogant voices for nice characters, deep voices for cute characters, too feminine voices for the villains... if you listen to the original voices you realise that they are supposed to seem completely different.
(i remember the first time i saw the flintstones in english and how shocked i was that the little guy had a deeper voice than fred... in german he has a high pitched tone)
User avatar #267 - kinginyellow (07/08/2014) [-]

there is a lot of such things. so it might be understandable what anime fans mean when they say jap dubs better...
in anime you can tell the situation, feeling and character just by the voice (except if its a storybased mislead) in most other languages it isnt done that way.
its the same with theater: in chinese theaters and older european you were able to tell it all just by the way a character was walking. it might seem strange if you arent used to it, but once you know the types its self-explanatory. if you then see an actor play the villain part but he walks like the good guy it just seems off to you...
User avatar #10 - hellfury (07/08/2014) [-]
Dude its not a bold assertion there are better dubs done in Japanese and everyone knows it.
I didn't say Avatar should be dubbed i like it as is. I was saying I understand why the guy might want for it to be subbed instead.

What I am saying is that our society is changing insofar, that women, who formerly had less rights than men, gain more rights. The system is being tweaked.

Since it is a very complex system, in some aspects it may occur, that men are in a disadvantaged position. Because the implementation of equal rights doesn't happen perfectly smooth and without flaws.

So I disagree with the implication, that the occuring drawbacks are intended by the system. They occur because the changes are not implemented 100% precise. Which should not be a surprise.

So instead of being butthurt that men have to put up with some discrimination for a change, and curse "feminism" as a whole and fight feminism as a whole, which would just divert attention and energy from the actual problem, we should focus on fixing the flaws. You know, like it's bullshit to systematically thumb me down just because I vaguely disagree with one aspect of a pratically non-existing discussion.

That's what I meant with it though, some people will just kick for anything. The weapons they restrict are purely for advantage, especially when they're spawnkilling us and the vehicles. I'm just glad EA had the sense to put up neutral servers a lot. Just wish they'd take away the servers from those people though, considering you actually aren't allowed to ban any weapons or kick for using certain weapons in ranked.
User avatar #94 - hellfury (05/23/2014) [-]
Dude if the admin is so bad they need an advantage they won't be able to beat a skilled person. Theres always a way to kill them even if they try to restrict stuff. My best moment on bf3 was when i managed to kill a heli pilot using a sniper rifle from 500m+ ( the right combination of luck and timing) and got insta banned. I didn't even care, it was worth it. Never made a shot like that again though it was glorious
