You can't include people who can't vote in a demographic of people who can vote.

In 2012, about 235,248,000 people voted (we can't use 2016 yet because not all the votes are in), but you'd imagine the number is similar since it's apparently been growing every election. Anyway, 1/6 of 235,248,000 is 39,208,000, and this year over 60,000,000 people voted for each candidate, which means that over 1/6 of the eligible voter population voted for each candidate.

For the sake of convenience, let's say each of the major candidates got 60 million votes. Combined, that's a little over half of the eligible voter population. Now your point isn't entirely invalid since that's still half of the eligible population that didn't vote, but your numbers are a bit off.

Sorry, I made a slight error. In 2012, 235,248,000 were ELIGIBLE to vote. The actual voter turnout was 129,085,403. However, the point still stands. Even if you just surveyed the entire eligible voter population, over 1/6 voted for each candidate, and half the population didn't vote.
