This is ok. modern motherboards and bios will not have issue. I have one gaming PC with a 4GB and a 2GB RAM sticks, works fine. If that is what you are wondering.
as for RAM timings, you can use slightly variants. for example one stick with 1600MHz, and one with 1333MHz, you motherboard will just use the lowest setting meaning both will run 1333MHz.
User avatar #969301 - zomaru (06/16/2014) [-]
Think about it this way.
Every RAM is slightly different. IF you have 4 sticks of the same type by the same company it will run smoothly because the Motherboard will be able to get the same results no matter which stick it routs to. Now if you were to stick a different brand, Even the same 4GB DDR3, Their would be minute differences in the speeds that could cause errors.
So yes, you could, but no, it's not recommended because Computers make mistakes.

Most RAM is sold in sticks of 2. So no. You can stick different brands of RAM in the same motherboard, but it's like Sticking a fat kid in a room with candy and telling him not to eat it. Eventualy shit will get messy.

For starters, you'll want to use this to keep track of your components and find the best prices in your area: pcpartpicker.com/parts/partlist/

Basically, all those sections are the MAJOR components that are required for your computer to work (and it features a nice compatibility filter so you don't pick components that are incompatible with one another). You'll want to add some case fans in the "Accessories/Other" section for sure (Mouse, Keyboard, and Monitor can be bought in stores or also added in the "Peripherals" & "Displays" if you prefer to buy them online as well), and maybe a wireless network adapter if you're limited to Wi-Fi internet wherever you live (Apartment with public internet, or router too far/on a different floor/can't get a wire from the Router to your PC, etc.)

Once you get all your pieces (And I strongly suggest you wait until you have ALL the pieces) it's a little bit like assembling a puzzle, except every piece pretty much tells you where to put it. You'll want to start with installing the Processor in the CPU socket on your motherboard, applying thermal paste onto the Processor, and then installing the CPU cooler. Afterwards you'll install the motherboard in the case, and begin adding the rest of the components. RAM, Graphics Cards, Sound Cards, and Wireless Network Adapters all install directly on the motherboard itself. Hard Drives, SSD's, CD Drives, and fans all go in their respective slots in the case and connect to the motherboard with SATA wires (the fans being an exception). once all the components are installed, you'll put in the Power Supply (Make sure it has enough Watts to support all the components in your system. The Site I linked shows you how many watts your system needs in the "estimated wattage" section in the top right corner, but make sure to pick a PSU that goes over the estimated amount by a bit to be safe) and connect the Motherboard & every other component you have to you Power Supply with the wires provided

As for the Do's and Dont's, make sure your hands are clean (obviously), and try to avoid static buildup (to avoid this, just touch the unpainted metal in your case (or a screw) periodically to "ground" yourself). As long as you're careful, you shouldn't have any problems, static damage rarely ever happens unless you're asking for it (Avoid wearing a wool sweater, sitting/building on a carpet, keep your cat away if you have one, etc.). And be careful when installing the Processor and plugging in the wires, if you bend/break any connector pins on the motherboard, you're fucked, but again, if you're careful this shouldn't be a problem.
User avatar #969350 - kyrozor (06/16/2014) [-]
Basically you need at least one of each component, Monitor, Mobo, CPU, Case, HDD/SSD, Ram, PSU, GPU etc. It's literally impossible to fuck up if you make a checklist. Then it's literally just plugging things in simulator. the only thing you can realistically fuck up is putting the CPU into the Mobo because it's just a bastard to re-do if you dick it up. Like I said other than that it's just plugging shit in, it's all wired and colour coded and shaped to fit specific things. Other than that you should be golden.
