Heat value of coal: www.eia.gov/tools/faqs/faq.cfm?id=72&t=2
Gives us 20,140,000 BTU per ton (907 kg). This is 5903 kWh per ton. Per kg then is 6.51 kWh.

Output of solar panels (look in the answer for Q2): www.kyocerasolar.com.au/australia/about-solar/common-questions-about-solar-energy.htm
This gives us 140-160W output for one square meter of solar panel. This is from a company selling solar panels so we can assume these numbers are favorable for the solar panels. One kilowatt-hour (kWh) is defined as one kilowatt used or produced over one hour consistently. So one square meter of solar panel can produce (using the average from the source) 0.15 kWh over one hour. Taking 6.51 and dividing by 0.15 gives us 43.4.

Therefore it takes 43.4 square meters of solar panel one full hour to produce the energy of 1 kg of coal, assuming the solar panels are getting full and direct sun with no obstructions or cloud cover. And wouldn't ya know it, 43.4 is pretty darn close to 50.

So a) Fuck off with your stupid bullshit about my math being way off when you don't have a clue what you're talking about. You're the one who needs to get educated. On that same note, where the hell are you getting a 95% conversion rate? The site I linked THAT IS SELLING THE DAMN THINGS even admits they only have a 14-16% efficiency rate.

And b) The comparison is not idiotic. It's about efficiency, not what our best long-term option is. Solar is absolutely our best long-term option WHEN IT BECOMES VIABLE. The point is that until that day, fossil fuels are simply far more efficient and cost-effective. It's not ideal at all, but it's reality. That's the thing people (like whoever made the comic in the content) don't get: Reality sucks, but living in a fucking fantasy world doesn't solve anything.

Next time you try to sound smart, do your research.

>with ease, if we wanted

Sure, if we threw nothing but money at the problem. Which is the problem with solar, you need shit tons of panels to make enough power to meet growing needs, and that costs space and money.

Ultimately it's not feasible to power the ENTIRE planet with solar, it just isn't.

Energy usage and energy production are getting more efficient and will continue to do so, even without generous state subsidies. The cost per watt of solar energy has been dropping for decades now, as a result of technological advancement and market competition. It may not be feasible to power the world with solar energy in 2014, but things are looking pretty good for the future.

Where the hell do you get your information. Solar power is incredibly inefficient at this time.

And even if your statement were true:

Well go on then. Build some power lines from the Sahara to the US.
