I understand what you're saying, but this whole controversy doesn't involve any of the actual oppressors or oppressed related to this flag.

But the flag is a symbol of that oppression.

but, like...
the whole point of this content is everyone is offended by them stealing the flags

I understand what you are saying, but everyone can think what they want. Everyone can fly any flag they want. I could go out and get an ISIS flag and put it on my car. That is just how it is. But one thing is that the black people of today have never been slaves, or at least a large majority. Same thing for Jewish people. I've never once seen one Jewish person steal a nazi flag because it offends them. Some people are still alive from the Holocaust, they don't say "We need to ban the nazi flag because it offends me!" They don't do that, but the Blacks do, because what? Their ancestors were slaves? Nothing ever happened to them.

TL;DR-Black people should just deal with it. Everyone has their right. Look at what Holocaust survivors do, or their sons and daughters do. Everyone has their right, offensive or not.
#97 - boomyturtle (07/24/2015) [-]
No, son. That's not it.
Should they be stealing these flags off of people's property? No. But it's ignorant to not even try to understand why there are such frustrations with it.
This flag is popular, not because it was associated with the Confederacy that was thoroughly identified with the institution of slavery, but because of the Dixiecrat party which was founded in 1948. I'm sure you're well aware of the Dixiecrat party but for those who are unaware, the Dixiecrat party was an anti-segregationist party. Not only that, but they were thoroughly apposed to lynching black people being a federal offense. They had have supporters and they had have a flag. That flag was the battleflag of Tennessee; what we now know as the Confederate flag (which we all know was never one of the three Confederate flags)
What this says to 95% of black people is "I do not like you. I do not want to integrate with you. You are inferior", hence the frustration.
Now about your argument about how Jewish people don't steal nazi flags or say it needs to be banned. This is true, but there are some very important differences that need to be taken into account. You're comparing apples to oranges. There aren't any state buildings flying the nazi flag and there hasn't been for over half a century. Up until recently, the Dixiecrat flag has been flown over state buildings. This is very VERY psychologically damaging to people to associate "I do not like you. I do not want to integrate with you. You are inferior" with the government...that has a lot of control of you.
It's not about slavery...it happened...it was heinous... it's about moving forward in this county. People are going to be racist. That's just a fact. As an American (which still fucking baffles me because I thought that the Confederacy..didn't want to be American anymore...so they split but whatever) you should be able to fly whatever flag you want. I honestly don't mind it when people fly flag not because I don't find it offensive, but because it makes it easier to distinguish between people I don't want anything to do with. Those that know what they're doing and know that it offends people and yet do it anyway. By all means do you but please be aware as to why people react the way they do.

Highly disagree with everyones sentiment that is "Confederate flag stands for racism etc etc". Being in southwestern Tennessee, I know dozens of people that fly the flag and every single one of them does because "southern pride" and "fuck da north(but not really)" . It's really just a us vs them mentality.
#477 - boomyturtle (07/25/2015) [-]
This is what people are offended by. This is what offended people associate with the Confederate flag now.

first fucking sentence is where i stop you, IT DOES NOT MATTER IF YOU ARE FRUSTRATED.

This not a government doing this, this is not a military impeding any form of your freedom. this is not a imperialist regime enforcing there culture.

this is a individual exercising there INDIVIDUAL FREEDOM. If you put a "but" right after saying "there allowed to fly it" you are calling for individuals to stop using there freedom because you fucking say so. god damn.

I don't believe you read what I wrote...The objective of that comment was to explain they are frustrated with the flag, point out why the Jew/Nazi flag comparison doesn't work here, and also to add that it IS in fact people's right to fly whatever flag they want but they should at least know why people react to it the way they do.
BTW take a deep breath and count to ten, hombre.
#113 - anon (07/24/2015) [-]
it is not the responsibility of anyone to acknowledge the reasons for anyone impeding on the freedom of other citizens and sorry i get upset its just people have wars over these sorts of things. Like freedom of expression.
#115 - boomyturtle (07/24/2015) [-]
I'm not condoning anyone's actions if that's what you were thinking. Theft is unacceptable to any degree. It's also a crime. Is it a crime to knowingly do something that offends people? No, but it is still kind of fucked up. Like I said, people should be free to do what they want as long as it isn't imposing on anyone's free will, but at the same time people shouldn't be surprised or confused when they are reacted to in the manner that they are.

You're right, black people have never been slaves but they've definitely been oppressed in some way, and while it may seem silly to us and they should just let it go, I could understand how they wouldn't want to let it go. And its not like nothing has ever happened to them, I have numerous friends that have told me about the systematic racism they've experienced and trust me its enough to piss anyone off. My point is, yes it would be great if they could just let it go, but if you've spent your life where people automatically think the worst of you because of the color of your skins, i can understand how you would want to tear down a symbol of that oppression.
#99 - anon (07/24/2015) [-]
>spent my life where people think the worst of you becuase of my skin.

The fuck are you talking about? I have called a fucking Nazi because i buzz my head. that's it, i have no tattoos and im just white with a short hair cut. so that means i am part of a movement that has openly approved of mass genocide? OH but i'm white that means i don't have emotions and can only oppress people.

What fucking systematic racism? do you mean racists in the system or do you mean actually fucking law that is racist? site it please you fucking idiot.

i just betray the thing as a fucking piece of fabric with color on, i lived in a home for 11 days a guy and his dad, knew the guy from hosting me 2 years ago where they had that flag hung up in their music room.

i didn't, but i still think its retarded since the kids today didn't grow up with slavery but only heard from it in history.
#60 - anon (07/24/2015) [-]
lol No, none of these niggers are actually offended by this, they're just using it as an excuse to steal and destroy things, because they're niggers.
The only ones being 'offended' are white people who get offended by proxy.

And literally none of these nigs had anything to do with this flag. If the people flying the flag agree with it's principles why can't they fly it? Muslims/Islamists are able to fly their flags, despite all the hatred they cause.
None of these 'black folk' have ever been slaves. None of them have feared for their lives for no reason. Not every white person owned slaves and more slave owners were black than white. They sold out their own people to be slaves.

These black 'people' are using their skin colour as an excuse to behave like the stereotype and thus reinforce it. No one is keeping the black man down but the black man himself.

TLDR: People can fly what flag they want, niggers shouldn't reinforce the stereotype that niggers are niggers and can't behave in civilized society.

Yeah, I get it, it's a symbol of fear for some people. But that doesn't mean that theft is okay, you want it taken down go through an official process or have a goddamn conversation with someone. Just because it upsets you doesn't give you the right to steal.
User avatar
#57 - harkness (07/24/2015) [-]
Yeah and I totally get that, but why should we expect one group of oppressed to be civilized when their oppressor never treated them as such? No one is above the law but all I'm saying is that you shouldnt be surprised when people take matters into their own hands.
