the grammar sure is strange, but my mom learned it fine, and she didn't even speak english at the time... I hate people (english speakers) saying french or spanish is way easier to learn... that's just because they don't know it. If you get past the time where your vocabulary is pretty limited you'll see it's actually pretty similar. English vocabulary has more french/latin than germanic words, so that may be one reason why people are so wierded out by it... however German grammar is 100 times more fucked up

Wrong. 60% of English is of German origin. 20% is Latin, and the other 20% is a jumble of other languages, including Greek, French, Spanish, and the Gaelic Languages.

Dutch is the closest language to English. can't be that hard dude
User avatar #191 - ecomp (12/23/2014) [-]
No it's not. Frisian is the closest language to English. Frisian isn't spoken in the Netherlands anymore, though it used to.
#218 - dudeabcd (12/23/2014) [-]
you're right and you're wrong. Yes, I forgot about Frisian being closer to English. Frisian is still spoken though. It's an official language in the Friesland province of the Netherlands. But Dutch is the closest of the "major" European languages. Let's not forget that Dutch is spoken by more people than all the scandinavan languages together. If you count Afrikaans, wich is basically Dutch, you can say it's spoken about as much as Polish (+- 40million)
User avatar #221 - ecomp (12/23/2014) [-]
German is closer to English than Dutch, but Dutch and German are nearly mutually intelligible. I didn't know that Frisian was still spoken. Is it commonly spoken like French in Quebec, or does it just sit there and be "official" like Scottish is in the UK, while nobody really speaks it?
#223 - dudeabcd (12/23/2014) [-]
I'm not sure how many people speak Frisian, but I guess it's not many. German is not closer to English, it is the closest language to Dutch apart from Afrikaans, but I really don't think it's closer to English. You have to keep in mind languages evolve locally. this doesn't count for the languags that were brought to places by colonials, like english in america. here in flanders,if you know the dialects (knowing them I mean we have a couple lessons in class) you can very clearly see, the more you go East, direction Germany, the the dialects spoken there sound German and have German grammar. If you go West, direction England, they will have grammar (not so clearly) but most of all words like in English.

keep in mind dialect =/= spoken Dutch. dialects are regional "languages" that happened not to become official.

for example: in normal Dutch we say "mossel", but in the West they say "mussel". in normal dutch we say "ik" for "I", but in German and the East people say "ich"
User avatar #224 - ecomp (12/23/2014) [-]
60% of English's vocabulary is German words. I don't know Dutch, so I can't speak for similarities in grammar, but German and English are fairly similar.
Also, I get your point, and even colonies of countries evolve. After all, Afrikaans did evolve from Dutch. There are also differences in UK english and US english. Example, in the UK, they say mum, while in the US and Canada, they say mom, but UK and Canada both call the letter "Z" "zed", and in the US they call it "zee".
#227 - dudeabcd (12/23/2014) [-]
I think you mean 60% of english words are Germanic. that may be true, I'm not sure. Germanic is to English (and Dutch and German) what Latin is to French and Spanish and Portuguese. Dutch and German have more words of Germanic origin than English, wich may be why anglophones find them so wierd.

Of course languages in the colonies evolve. The only languages that don't evolve are dead languages, and even in Latin there are new words being added today because there are organisations (the Catholic church I think is the most important one) that officially use Latin.
What I meant is, and this goes for languages of the same family, like the germanic family and the latin family, that languages that were goegraphically close to eachother are more similar today. This doesn't apply to the "colonies", like english in the US. It's still English. That is why I'm pretty sure Dutch is closer to English than German. for one thing the grammar in Dutch is closer to English than German grammar is to English.

you should look at dialects rather than sound differences because sound differences don't mean a language is different. even Dutch dtuch and Belgian dutch are incredibly different in sounds
User avatar #233 - ecomp (12/24/2014) [-]
Okay. Either way, Frisian is still closer

Max Steel, man! Back when he was all about training.
There even was a series on TV a while back, where he was a regular dude who trained a fuckload, and saved the day, kinda like a batman that isn't scared of the sun. I remember he got a disease that would slowly eat away his body if he wasn't being active every day, but it didn't do shit to him because he was too busy skydiving without a parachute into the mount everest to snowboard his way down, so he couldn't afford time to give a shit.

Then they made a new series, where his strength comes from a robot armor.
Woohoo, I guess.
