| Who said video games need to tell a story? An opinion of what makes a good game is completely subjective. The only two things that have definitely improved over the years if sound quality and graphical quality. Games nowadays are made to be finished. They give almost every player a cool train ride to the end or some kind of other way to make sure the player "experiences" their story. Such as assassin's creed with their "press this button 1000 times to receive one chocolate" story progression and gameplay. Hence why games are also stuck with 5 hour campaigns now too. Older devs didn't give a shit. Stuck at a hard boss? You better fucking suck it up and keep trying or you're not seeing what happens. They made games to be played, and to experience the accomplishment of completing one. You grew skill as you played, developed strategies, found secrets. You didn't get good because you played for a long time, you got good because you LEARNED. Of course, not all games nowadays are bad, neither are all older games good. But saying all newer games are more polished and better at telling a story is ridiculous. Duke Nukem Forever doesn't have a better story then FFVII and Skyward Sword's gameplay is a lot less polished then that of Ocarina of time, in fact, they implemented LESS features in Skyward Sword to make it more accessible and sell more copies. The gaming industry has changed, and just because games are "shiny" to sell well, doesn't mean they play well. One thing I know for sure is that I can name a lot more AAA titles made from 1994-2000, than from 2007-2013. Not really, and telling me that I'm flat out wrong over something that's entirely subjective is just being close minded to other opinions. I'm not saying you're wrong, you can't be; my opinion is just different then yours, and I feel the way I do because I think there are genuinely better games from older consoles then newer ones. There are obviously things that have advanced since the 80's and 90's, and I fully acknowledge them; but you seem to be ignoring the stream lining that recent games seem to be doing. I personally think that games have lost the challenge and depth that they used to have, and it feels like it's more about making sure that someone finishes your game, instead of making it a challenge to finish your game. Just because they're capable of telling a "better story", that doesn't mean that they do. That's why I like older games, like Majora's Mask for example; but that's just what I personally think, and there's no reason to get so defensive just because that's what I think. | ||
