Social studies is sorta my thing. I study anthropology in my off time.

The distinction I make between wedding and marriage is exactly what I support gay marriage as an American. I mean, truthfully I do not particularly show a support of homosexuality for any salient reasons. Although I respect religious institutions, in fact I really love religion although not being a theist, but the reality is in a nation like the United States - there have been specific legislation and political culture consensus to separate church and state. If religious institutions do not want to wed homosexual couples, that is up to them - but their religious influence on the state level should have no say whether or not homosexuals sign into a legal bonding contract.

Exactly, treat people like real people. I am not a US citizen but I live in Australia so my government is basically a bunch of fan girls going crazy over anything your government decides.

They certainly did not; although I would wager the wedding ceremony probably extended from religious culture.

That being said, you can be married by the state and not actually wed.

Culture is fun.

i dont know if you would call it religious but from what ive read, the original wedding ceremony was created by pagans for things like hand fasting, which they would perform for both straight and gay couples.
