| I actually agree, to a degree. I'd like to foster children but to bring people who don't exist because of this gamble. Life can be made tolerable. And I prefer to be aware, creative, dignified than to constantly seek pleasure like that so I do agree, life is to be lived more dignified and to actually seek out struggle. Ideal life for me: adopted kids, wife/girlfriend, train them mentally and physically with the same values as me. | ||

| I never got that reasoning. Unless it's permanent, the mark you leave is worthless. Experience may not be worthless because it's impermanent, but legacy sure as hell is. Well there ought to be a special reason if you want to put your offspring through the varieties of mental and physical sufferings the world has to offer. Not to mention what a genetic gamble it is #68 -
gleb (12/29/2015) [-] Just quickly on the second point. The world has so much more positive aspects to it than "mental and physical sufferings". Kinda sad if you see the world like that. Even if the mark is permanent it's still worthless to you once your dead. But since we don't know the meaning/goal/point of life, or even if there is/has to be one. Surely the point is to experience teaching and bringing up a person. I'd be happy if I worked in a warehouse then came home and just played games till the next day, but once I'm 40 I'm pretty sure it'll hit me hard how I've basically done nothing meaningful with my life. The idea of bringing up a functional and productive member of society is one of such challenge that it should have some worth on your list of things to do before you die. gleb (12/29/2015) [-] But why should there be anything beyond instincts? Like I said nowadays with the sheer amount of people alive, it's not necessary to have kids for human survival. A common reason is for continuing family legacies; people want to leave a part of themselves behind, more through how they teach their kids than literally leaving a physical (child) thing behind. I never got that reasoning. Unless it's permanent, the mark you leave is worthless. Experience may not be worthless because it's impermanent, but legacy sure as hell is. Well there ought to be a special reason if you want to put your offspring through the varieties of mental and physical sufferings the world has to offer.
