gjsmothefirst (12/30/2012) [-] Same guy that hates gaming laptops, right? (not holding a grudge, just asking). I'm in the application process right now, and from everything I've been told, you can change majors if you want to - your selected major on your application is more of a guideline than a rule (think Pirates of the Caribbean and the pirate's code). That being said, pick something close to your intended field I'm going for a 5 year degree (Go through a rushed bachelors and masters to get two degrees whilest only spending 5 years) can't switch degrees with that. Most likely I'm going for computer engineering. If it's to the point where I have to switch degrees it's so bad, I'll push for it. #120
-
gjsmothefirst (12/30/2012) [-] I'm going for a 5 year degree in engineering too, it's actually the same thing for your first 2 or 3 years. Usually they compress your senior year of undergrad + all of grad school into 2 years. But what I'm referring to happens before this. Your choice on the application isn't necessarily what you go for - it's just a suggestion. Once you actually get to your college (before you start courses), you get to talk to counselors and such that'll tell you everything you could possibly want to know about the various majors, and that's where you pick. You've got plenty of time man, don't sweat it. Oh thats awesome! And thanks man, I'm glad I know that now. I've been freaking out over not getting enough information before next year #126

gjsmothefirst (12/30/2012) [-] No problem, I hate this just as much as you will, might as well help you out. You honestly don't have to worry about it in your junior year either, summer before senior is the earliest I've seen anyone start caring. Some people go on college visits before that, although that's just because it's more convenient then. Also, remember that you don't have to pick a college until after you get accepted (unless you do early decision, which is kinda stupid - you *have* to go to that college if accepted), so you can apply to a bunch and then pick later.

gjsmothefirst (12/29/2012) [-] >MITX is woefully underpowered IMHO, you can put a quad-core i7 in a nice laptop these days >Somewhat. My desktop ways about 50lb (steel case and lots of hardware), and it's water-cooled, so taking it somewhere else is actually a big hassle. >True, but many modern 3D games are going to look horrible, if they work at all. You really need a nice nVidia or ATI/AMD mobile chipset for gaming on the road. >Not really, it's about the same price as the equivalent desktop GPU, though not in a separate card. Works for me. | They blunt faster cuz they are in the sheathe. Gravity pushes the blade down on the sheathe and slowly wears it away. Also, in the hands of a trained martial artist, I wouldn't be so sure. I think you should take the word of a shodan in Togakure Ryu on this one. It isn't necessarily an accelerated process but between the rock powders that one uses to clean and protect a katana and the force of gravity causing pressure between this rock, the sheathe, and the blade, it will eventually dull the blade. Plus it goes against the etiquette and all. I disagree. I kept my first sword a lot like that until I learned better, it lost it's edge pretty quick. I have another sword of about the same quality that I stored properly. Still cuts bamboo like butter. #215

gjsmothefirst (12/28/2012) [-] It's still really opinion, you can cook almost any way you want. Never fried meat it its own grease, probably because that doesn't happen. Cooking is not frying. Pan-fried can be done many ways, yes, but the most typical way is in a thin layer of oil. None of this changes the fact that flammable furniture polish would still catch fire, actually, if heated - even if sprayed on a cold pan first. It would still reach a certain temperature (eventually) and catch fire. frying meat in its own grease is done quite a bit not things like chicken cuz a lot of the time chicken makes so much juice it would boil the meat not fry it but, things like stakes an other cuts of cows bacon is a big one you don't need anything but, a pan and heat to make bacon it frys in its own grease.

gjsmothefirst (12/28/2012) [-] When you say "the right way" I hope you realize that's only an opinion. Best pancakes I ever had (and still have every day) are made by heating the pan first, then throwing in a chunk of butter and spreading it around - you can't even do this if you start with a cold pan, since the butter needs to melt. Pan-fried stuff is also usually made by first heating the pan, then adding oil. If you read what I said before" there are exceptions to that thought when making some things" Also depending on what you are frying you don't have to use oil at all just a hot pan an meat it frys in it's own grease Other time you don't oil the pan at all you brush oil on the meat or what ever you are frying the put it in the pan All deepns on what you or cooking or how you want it cooked.
