Basically, the two pilots connect via neural links, working in tandem to control the Jaeger mechs. It's to lighten the mental strain so the pilots don't die.

It may seem uncoordinated and clumsy, but they connect mentally, and think together, as one, to more easily control the Jeagers.
User avatar #72 - jalthelas (07/29/2014) [-]
Don't they also favor brothers as well?

Because their mental link is so much stronger.
User avatar #74 - manofiron (07/29/2014) [-]
I don't think it was explicitly stated that blood relatives were favored over un-related pilots. That does make sense, however, any two people that were able to maintain a strong mental connection were able to be pilots, I would think. In theory, any pair of individuals could work.
User avatar #130 - curveball (07/29/2014) [-]
Why do they need the neural link at all? In the movie, they're seen controlling the jaeger with touchscreen pads and voice commands. Isn't the point of a neural link to eliminate all this? Also, if the pilots were linked mentally why do they need to communicate verbally (like when Mako tells Raleigh about the jaeger's sword)? If our minds were connected, once I thought of something wouldn't the same thought also be in your mind without me having to tell it to you?

your watching a giant robot fighting a monster that came from the center of the earth, while standing knee deep in the middle of the pacific ocean... AND YOUR QUESTIONING THE LOGISTICS OF THE STUPID NEURAL LINK??
User avatar #154 - curveball (07/29/2014) [-]
Well, it is supposed to be a big part of the story; it's the entire reason jaegers need two "drift compatible" pilots working together instead of one. What's supposed to be a critical aspect of the plot (the relationships between the pilots) just left me scratching my head.
User avatar #133 - manofiron (07/29/2014) [-]
Idk, man. Don't ask me. This sounds like a continuity error. Nevertheless, I still highly enjoyed the movie, even with all the plot holes.

Very true.

What manofiron said and think left brain/ right brain, if the halves of your brain were people and you were a giant mech warrior.
