If they have your SSN, it's a fairly simple process to get your full name and address. They can then open up lines of credit (credit cards, personal loans, etc) that are in your name ---> Identity Theft.

Now they have lines of credit in your name, for their use.

We have a similar thing in the UK with National Insurance Number. But our landlords and employers will ask for that shit, so it's a bit worrying sometimes to say the least...

If it's only verified by a card, how do you verify your identity online? Like when you file taxes or similar things?
#12 - Absolute Madman (05/27/2015) [-]
its just a unique number that identifies us to the fed. Govt system, much more organized than a name. But if the wrong people acess it then lenders are legally allowed to give that person money ( most honestly dont give a shit if its really you, they still get paid)

its primary purpose is to track individuals for Social Security purposes, the Social Security number has become a de facto national identification number for taxation and other purposes. illegal immigrants can get fake SSN cards and birth certificates, theres people that have stolen paper that they print real ones on. they find someones number and info to put on so they appear legal and can do stuff like get welfare, pass background checks and get credit cards. some think i'm being racist but they actually do this and i knew people who sold them and knew people who bought them

It's essentially a fancy ID number that companies use to verify someone's identity. They can't forge your ID unless they had other information about you, among other things, and identity theft could be considered something as minor as ordering pizza under someone else's name, or as major as stealing all their money. Although to put that in perspective, give someone your email address and the talented can do a lot of damage through that.
It's not hard to keep it secret - most keep it locked up at home or in a secure place and it's not something you use to often. The only way really for it too leak is if a company gets hacked and loses customer info, or you do something really dumb.

Its for the Social Security program. Social Security is a program where they send monthly payments to individuals who have an issue with their ability to generate income so that people don't fall into poverty simply because they are too old to work or a spouse died unexpectedly. Since the number issued for the program is unique to each individual, knowing that number is a way to prove your identity without the need for any other form of ID. Many credit card companies and banks use it for this purpose and so someone else knowing your social security number can come at a great financial cost.

Why didn't they just make a citizens index number yet? (or however you wanna translate that).
Mine's just on the back of my ID, unique to me in mine and all other european countries, and it's not linked to any sort of money service so it can't be used wrong if it fell in to the wrong hands. it exists solely for the purpose of identifying the ID card.
Because when we need to identify us with a bank or something, we give our whole ID, and they just make a copy of it. and that number also links to my digital ID from the government. So it's just another way to couonteract forgery, to double check if the information on the number, matches all the other information on the card.
But thanks for the explanation anyway.
But one question, how does someone using your social number on a credit card harm you? they would still have to give up their own bank account number and adress to send the bills to right?
