Majora's Mask was really hard, I think it would be best for someone that has never played a Zelda game to start out easier, such as Ocarina of Time or even Windwaker. We don't want him to hate the Legend of Zelda right away when he can't beat Majora's Mask after five attempts.

Depends really.
I'd never suggest you start with Skyward Sword, Wind Waker or any of the handheld ones. Majora's Mask you must play just after Ocarina of Time.
So that cuts it down a little. Now, it's up to personal choice: If you're into exploration but not really into puzzles, try the original one (given you like retro). If you like balls-hard RPG-style games (and again, retro gaming), play Zelda II. If you're in between exploration and puzzles, try A Link to the Past. If you like dungeon puzzles more try out one of those that're left (Ocarina of Time or Twilight Princess).

It's me again. I wanted to say a few things more.
Mind you, what I've told you is very dumbed down and oversimplified. All of them have puzzles and exploration. It's more on what they're focused. Also, I didn't mention Zelda II is focused on exploration as well as Zelda 1.
As my personal suggestion, I'd say ALttP, then OoT, then MM, then go play whatever attracts you the most. I'd also suggest alternatives though. Start with Ocarina, then Majora's and then whatever; or start in order of release.

Personally I'm a big fan of chronologically tackling a series. Get ahold of the Hyrule Historia timeline and start em up. I'd honestly save the leftmost split for last (if only because while they ARE fun, I have an issue with how that split is titled* and therefore have become unreasonably biased against it).

*Reasons for bias is spoilers so I'm being a bro and not typing them out.

i'd say a link to the past, then work your way up to ocarina and play in order from there. that way you get to experience the older days of the series. if you're into classic nes though id say start with the original.
