They patched it out after a guy oneshot a world boss

It depends on the universe for most cases. As for actual defintions, only paladin holds meaning in a non-historical sense. Whereas templar simply just refers to "The knights part of the holy order" or some shit like that.

Paladin is a generic term, templar is when people want to get more fancy. In most videogames there's absolutely no difference.

If you want to be specific though, Paladins are tanky, defensive characters with holy healing magic. If there ever is a discretion, templars will usually forgoe the magic part of that.

Paladins can belong to any sect and are represented in multiple ways. Paladins don't always purge evil or abominations, but one thing remains true about paladins. They are good, just, and pure.

I have, and continue to do so.
Templars were the ones who thought they were the cause. They overly abused the power given to them by the church at the time and have absolutely nothing to do with the crusade. they were purged (hence why we now have a friday the thirteenth) because they were abusing their powers and performing other jackassery.

I don't really think that a designation of hero that's marked by purity, righteousness, and other white-knightish traits could actually be called "full of themselves"

Pretty sure it just depends on whatever the creator of a universe prefers.
