That aint plot. That's what the game is all about. It stopped being a grounded, gritty shooter to become a generic brown space marine in not space game.

The controls were crisper, the wall detection for sliding was more precise, the rolling wasn't as rigid, the aiming and hit detection was a lot smoother. Gears 2 is objectively a better game.

Now, I do understand what you're saying as far as the strategy is concerned - you did have to be quite a bit more careful in Gears 1, and I do understand the allure of that, HOWEVER it would be ridiculous to say that Gears 2 sucks just because you personally don't like the direction it went in. Besides, it's still super unique. Can you think of any other game that did what the 3 GoW games have done?
User avatar #1221472 - alexanderburns (05/03/2015) [-]
The controls were the exact same. The wall detection was the exact same. The rolling was less floaty. The aiming and hit detection were the exact same. What the hell kind of "I like this game better so it must be better factually" goggles are you wearing?

It's not fucking at all ridiculous to say that. That's how opinions work. I think it's ridiculous to say the sequels didn't turn the franchise into generic bro shooters. It took away everything that was fucking awesome about the first game except the lancers and gore.
And it's barely unique at all. It's brown and gray over the top big sci fi marine shooter #5001, but its gray boogums are unique in looks.

I can think of other games that did what Gears of War 2 and 3 did. Nearly every shooter after Gears 1 fits that bill. Gears of War 1's cover system was revolutionary, and a shit ton of third person shooters have copied it because every cover system before it was stiff as can be. It was also the first heavy gore TPS. Gears 2 and 3 didn't have anything at all new or unique. The sequels didn't even refine the original gameplay beyond nerfing active sniper for multiplayer, and all the sweet executions. Fuck, Gears 2 and 3 multiplayer brought more fuck to the table than good with all the OP weapons.

User avatar #1221705 - alexanderburns (05/03/2015) [-]
I am addressing it. You're saying some opinions are true facts and anyone who doesn't share them are wrong. You've addressed it by repeating the same thing: that you hold some opinions as facts. What makes a quality good is completely subjective. You have no points. You have an opinion that doesn't make any sense.
User avatar #1221707 - studbeefpile (05/03/2015) [-]
I'm not saying you're wrong for your opinion, I'm saying your opinion doesn't equate fact.

There are absolutely certain qualities that make a game good. Goes back to the whole Bubsy 3D vs SM64 thing. Solid Controls, Variety, Good Polish/Graphics, Coherent Design, all contribute to making a 'good' game. You absolutely cannot say that Black Ops 2 is a bad game. It's very well designed, controls well, looks good, etc. I don't like it. But just because I don't like it, doesn't mean I cant recognize that it's put together well.

User avatar #1221703 - studbeefpile (05/03/2015) [-]
You're not even addressing what I'm saying anymore. You've said that several times, and each time I've addressed it, with the idea that there's such a thing as inherently good qualities to a game. Why do you keep avoiding my points?
User avatar #1221696 - alexanderburns (05/03/2015) [-]
You hold what you perceive to be popular opinions as facts, and call any conflicting opion simple opinions that don't affect the truth, which is actually just another opinion.
User avatar #1221699 - studbeefpile (05/03/2015) [-]
There are certain qualities to games that make them inherently good. That's how games get popular. There is such a thing as an inherently good game, or an inherently bad game, regardless of opinions. Now, that doesn't mean everyone has to like what's 'inherently good', like I said before, I hate every CoD to come out after Black Ops, but I can still recognize that they have the qualities of a good game. You're the one trying to say that your opinion of it makes it inherently bad.
#1221687 - alexanderburns (05/03/2015) [-]
>"I'm 18 dude, I'm a competitive Powerlifter"

You hold what you perceive to be popular opinions as facts, and call any conflicting opion simple opinions that don't affect the truth, which is actually just another opinion.
User avatar #1221695 - studbeefpile (05/03/2015) [-]
My opinion doesn't make it fact, but the qualities of the game do. Like I said, I'm not saying you - or anyone else have to like it, I'm just saying the fact that you don't like it, doesn't make it inherently a 'bad' game. What's so hard to understand about that? It's the same as if you said "Steak is a bad food". Maybe you don't like steak, but the reality of the situation is that it's a good solid food with a lot of nutrients. You don't have to like it, but that doesn't make it inherently bad.

I also don't know why you may-may arrowed my age and hobby.
#1221508 - alexanderburns (05/03/2015) [-]
Football is shit.
Soccer is shit.
Gears of War 2 is a bad game for the reasons that I don't like it.

You have no idea what is subjective. You have no idea what you're talking about. You hold what you perceive to be popular opinions as facts, and call any conflicting opion simple opinions that don't affect the truth, which is actually just another opinion. At this point I question your age because only one completely inexperienced in life could hold a belief system so inherently flawed. It's blatant bias and nothing more. It's not objective It's not reality. It's simply taking one opinion over all others based on arbitrary factors.
User avatar #1221588 - studbeefpile (05/03/2015) [-]
Just because you don't like something, doesn't make it bad.

Is it subjectively bad to you? Yes. Is it objectively bad to everyone? Hell no. Your opinion doesn't make something good or bad, I don't understand how you don't get that. I also don't understand what makes you think I'm a kid, just because I have a different view than you. I'm 18 dude, I'm a competitive Powerlifter, and a paid musician. I've experienced plenty of life, and I just happen to think you're wrong. You're the only one out of the two of us that's gotten booty bothered over a conversation about video games on the internet. What does that say about your age?

www.google.ca/webhp?sourceid=chrome-instant&ion=1&espv=2&ie=UTF-8#q=definition%20of%20subjective

Gears 2 is not recognized to be an excellent game. No good game feel. Standard graphics. What the fuck even is a not solid mechanic. I don;t see how you could at all begin to believe that how interesting a story is is objective. It is a bad game, and that's a 100% subjective matter. Bubsy 3D is objectively great and of course there's denying it's bad because that's how subjectivity works, and even if it weren't people can still deny facts along with anything else ever.
You can subjectively dislike it, and subjectively think it's a bad game, but that doesn't stop anyone from thinking it's a good game.

I don't know what strange world you live in where Gears of War 2 is thought of as excellent. Fucking 90% of people I see talk about it on the internet think it blows dog ass.

If you think that the quality of a game is undeniable, set in stone, or universally recognized, then you must not spend much time in the real world. Spend a week on this very board and you'll see what's objectively true about games. Pro tip: it aint quality.
User avatar #1221507 - studbeefpile (05/03/2015) [-]
Okay, by your logic you can say that Foot Ball is a bad game, just because you don't like it. The truth is millions of people love it, so it obviously has something going for it. Once again, it's your prerogative to dislike it, but that doesn't make it inherently bad. If tons of people like it, chances are there's something objectively good about it.

Also, you're the first and only person I've ever talked to who disliked Gears 2.

Quality absolutely contributes to a good game. It doesn't necessarily always have to (in the case of a game like the original Super Mario bros. - one could say the graphics were shit, and 2D = dinosaur, but it's still a good game), however, there is definitely something to be said about a game with good polish.

The reality of the situation is you opinion doesn't define what's 'good' and 'bad'. I hate every Call of Duty game that's come out after Black Ops. I think they're over complicated, repetitive, and I don't like how much of a cluster fuck they are. However, I can absolutely not say that they're all inherently bad games. They look great, have fantastic mechanics/game feel, and they're appealing to their demographic. They're good games, but I don't like them.

Just because you don't like Gears 2, doesn't make it a bad game. That's all I'm trying to say.
User avatar #1221493 - alexanderburns (05/03/2015) [-]
You have no idea what subjective and objective are
User avatar #1221495 - studbeefpile (05/03/2015) [-]
...actually I think you're the one who's confused.
User avatar #1221491 - alexanderburns (05/03/2015) [-]
Not if you understand how subjectivity works. Example:
I think that Borderlands 2 is among the biggest piles of shit I have ever played.
I don't like Borderlands 2.
I like Borderlands 2.
Borderlands 2 is the best game of all time.
Borderlands 2 is a piece of shit that does everything except aesthetics and character personalities completely wrong. The gameplay is hours of boring shitjogging with horrible 2001 shooting crammed about the cross country track that is the level design.

All of those are opinion statements, and are therefore subjective. The only differences are of expression.
User avatar #1221492 - studbeefpile (05/03/2015) [-]
I don't know. Let's go back to Bubsy 3D. That game is objectively bad. You can like it or dislike it, but there's no denying it's a shitty game. The mechanics are bad, the graphics are shit, the controls are wonkey as fuck. There isn't anything good going for it. Subjectivity is liking it anyway, but objectively it's a bad game - hence why no one likes it.
On the other hand, we have Super Mario 64. That game was objectively good (for it's time). Solid controls, fantastic coherent level design, good flow, etc. In it's day, that game was objectively good, especially when compared to something like Bubsy 3D. Subjectivity is disliking that game anyway, because you don't like platformers, or the bright colors, etc. However, that game was still wildly popular, and to the day recognized to be revolutionary.

Gears 2 is recognized to be an excellent game, with good feel, pretty graphics, solid mechanics, interesting story, etc. You can subjectively dislike it, but that doesn't make it a bad game.
User avatar #1221486 - alexanderburns (05/03/2015) [-]
Yeah, no. Me saying it's shit isn't saying my opinion is fact. That's me saying that I think it's shit, and you saying that I can't possibly think it's shit. See: "HOWEVER it would be ridiculous to say that Gears 2 sucks just because you personally don't like the direction it went in"
User avatar #1221487 - studbeefpile (05/03/2015) [-]
"It's shit" and "I don't like it" are two different things.
User avatar #1221482 - alexanderburns (05/03/2015) [-]
OKAY
WHAT EVEN
>say "controls" about 700 times
>then act like you've been saying "game feel" this whole time WHICH YOU FUCKING DIDN'T JUST SAY IN THE LAST TWO COMMENTS
>game feel and controls ARE NOT AT ALL THE SAME THING
>ONE IS WHAT DOES WHAT WHEN YOU PRESS IT, THE OTHER IS HOW IT FEELS TO DO STUFF
>been saying "game feel" is undeniably objectively better in 2
>which it fucking is neither objective, undeniable, nor is it better to me

...do you not know what subjective is? Do you not know what unique is? Do you not know what words mean? Do you honestly believe anyone should prefer the sequels better than the original just because you do? Because this whole fucking time you've been telling me that I can't possibly think every GoW after 1 is shit just because like things in the sequels better. There has been 0 objectivity involved in your arguments as to why I should stop loving the original and stop hating the shitquels.
User avatar #1221485 - studbeefpile (05/03/2015) [-]
Calm down dude, you're talking about video games on the internet. I'm sorry my semantics pissed you off.

First of all, I love Gears 1. Not at all saying you shouldn't like it, or it's bad, or anything. However, it was the first of it's kind, and it definitely shows. There's a lot of glitchy nonsense in it, and it doesn't control smoothly. NOW, to be clear, when I say it doesn't 'control' smoothly, I don't mean the buttons don't work, or do something different than they did in the sequels, I mean your character moves rigidly. I'm not referring to 'control' in the sense of the controller and the buttons, I'm referring to the control and movement of your character.

I believe game feel can be objective. You'd be hard pressed to find a single person in the world that preferred the game feel of Bubsy 3D to Super Mario 64.

I'm not telling you what you should personally like or dislike, I'm just saying that Gears 2 isn't a bad game. This whole time you've been trying to say Gears 2 is worthless because you don't like the fact that there's just a bit less strategy involved, and the grayscale isn't as high. If anything, you're trying to say your opinion is fact.
User avatar #1221478 - alexanderburns (05/03/2015) [-]
The exact same buttons do the exact same things. How in the name of god could the controls be refined if they haven't changed at all? Do you know what controls are?
User avatar #1221479 - studbeefpile (05/03/2015) [-]
...do you not know what game feel is?
User avatar #1221476 - alexanderburns (05/03/2015) [-]
And I can tell you for a fact that it doesn't. The controls are the exact same and I got hit in the personal space by snipers in multiplayer about 80000000000000000000000000 times in both games.
User avatar #1221477 - studbeefpile (05/03/2015) [-]
To be honest I'm just talking about the campaigns. I've never played multiplayer for either gears 1 or 2. Only Gears 3.

See: "HOWEVER it would be ridiculous to say that Gears 2 sucks just because you personally don't like the direction it went in"

>then act like you've been saying "game feel" this whole time WHICH YOU FUCKING DIDN'T JUST SAY IN THE LAST TWO COMMENTS
>game feel and controls ARE NOT AT ALL THE SAME THING

Just because you don't like the campaign's plot, doesn't mean the game doesn't have better mechanics.
User avatar #1221278 - alexanderburns (05/02/2015) [-]
That aint plot. That's what the game is all about. It stopped being a grounded, gritty shooter to become a generic brown space marine in not space game.
And the mechanics were literally the exact same but with different gun stuff, including ruing the shotgun by turning it into a sometimes megagun and sometimes peanut launcher.
User avatar #1221458 - studbeefpile (05/03/2015) [-]

User avatar #1221473 - studbeefpile (05/03/2015) [-]
I'm literally playing through the Gears games back to back right now. I started with Gears 2, and I'm playing Gears 1 right now. I can tell you for a fact that Gears 2 has more refined controls and hit detection.

User avatar #1221473 - studbeefpile (05/03/2015) [-]
I'm literally playing through the Gears games back to back right now. I started with Gears 2, and I'm playing Gears 1 right now. I can tell you for a fact that Gears 2 has more refined controls and hit detection.

Football is shit.

You're the only one out of the two of us that's gotten booty bothered over a conversation about video games on the internet. www.google.ca/webhp?sourceid=chrome-instant&ion=1&espv=2&ie=UTF-8#q=definition%20of%20subjective
