Why am I being thumbed down? A white person from South Africa that moves to the USA doesn't become an African-American. It's obvious that the term African-American applies to those who have African slaves as ancestors. That's really a no-brainer.

I wasn't born in Africa, my mom's black, and she's African. I am racially African American, I'm also a bit scottish though, which is why I'm white.

Well, yeah. I have tons of friends who are half white, and half japanese or something, and they call themselves Japanese Americans. Even if you're mixed race, you generally define yourself as your main or two main races. If I was asked my nationality, I wouldn't say 'Mixed Race'. All African American means is that you're African, and you were born in America or your parents were American.
