The "new" models of aircraft are just upgrade packages on older crafts, not actual new craft.

They really could just build new versions of old 'craft. As far as I know, every fixed wing combat/bomber is older than I am 18, and joining shipping in July to AF.
New A-10s, B-1s, F-15s, B-52s, F-16s. Would be great.

Not to interrupt the mutual exchange of aviation pornography, thought I'd interject my two cents here. I'm against the F-35 program, for a few reasons. Largely the cost, not being any cheaper than F-22s. And worst still, the F-35C initially had a faulty arresting hook, it couldn't catch the wires on a carrier. Why did it fail? They put it in the wrong location. Hundred years of naval aviation and we can't put the hook in the right spot when designing an aircraft. Way to go Lockheed Martin.

F-35Cs have subsequently been fixed now, and will end up in qualifications on the Nimitz later this year. We'll see how it goes...

I'm a Hornet fanboy, what can I say.

I read just today that the F-35 passed a milestone marker in the SVTOL tests. But it is a massive waste in cash that could be put into upgrading and enlarging the US fleet.
I'm a F-14 fanboy so I have an irrational dislike in the Hornet, sorry because I have a variable sweep fetish.

You heard about the F-15E Silent Eagle? It's a stealthed out version. Some BUFFs are upwards of 60 years old and still work like gold. And they stopped producing F-15s for domestic use was in '98 I believe.

Carrier-based aircraft are usually build to be less prone to wear and tear, much as you would find if the F/A-18's would be moved into the forrests in case of an attack on the airfields. It also uses the hook on runways, it gives them a shorter landing length, - also if the runway is slippery or snowy.

spain, switzerland, canada, kuwait, malysia and the aussies use them as well without carriers, the US is the only country using them with it

When my dad's MP group got their first laser pointers for their pistols a guy just said, "Can't they follow the light back and shoot you?" and everyone just stared and awkwardly kept working.
#49 - airforcexplain (06/06/2014) [-]
I don't claim to be an expert on the subject Oh who am I kidding, that's exactly what I'm doing here. .

There is a variety of reasons why the Finnish might have chosen the F/A-18C/D over the F-15. There may have been a licensing issue, however that's unlikely. They probably liked the F/A-18C/D's superior ground attack capabilities, as they had and still have no other strike aircraft. Given the subsequent modifications made to increase its attack capabilities, I'd say this was a large factor for it winning the contest.

Additionally, the Finnish built most of their own F/A-18s. Which means they probably didn't ever install the heavy naval arresting hook. The F/A-18 is also a lighter aircraft (even with the arresting hook), something the Finns might have found attractive.

<-- One of the Finnish built F/A-18Cs.
