just because someone has depression doesn't mean they're a debby-downer all the time. some days suck, but usually they go about their day normal. look at Robin Williams, clearly he didn't act like the typical depressed person. the colorblind metaphor was an explanation for when people say "get over it' or ""you're just imagining it" or something like that. it's like missing a leg or something. yeah you can live with it, but certain things are more difficult for you like spotting red squares or running.

Depression is also chemical imbalances inside your brain along wit the negative feelings everyone is used to hearing about. It's not just recognizable feelings or sadness, it's a measurable condition that a lot of people have. One of the reasons every thinks it's just people feeling sad is periods of sadness can cause it by training your brain to feel down all the time and not supply happiness, just like not exercising causes your body to decline in performance.

there's "things just arent going your way" and "i havent felt real joy in over 10 years."

the former is a "rough patch". the latter is "depression".

i really thought i was just going through a rough patch. but after 10 years i realized, "okay... ive had a lot of great things happen to me.. why aren't i happy." is when i realized i was depressed. you don't feel joy from things you used to love like drawing/music/sports whatever. you dont care to see the ones you love, you don't really care. it's just a very lackadaisical attitude that carries on. its a constant feeling of dread or anxiety, pessimism.

imagine being colorblind. people say "point to the red square'. its a simple task. but people with depression literally just can't see the world the way everyone else does, all they see are gray squares.

I am colorblind. And trust me when I say I haven't had a single good thing happen to me in years, and it really doesn't phase me because I don't let it, I keep living everyday the same way and just deal with it.

you clearly don't know what depression is then.

it's the feeling of anguish, the feeling of nothing, the absolute feeling of sadness...
that doesn't stop. it goes on. you watch your fav show? nothing. you try to do your chores? you're out of energy.
everything is black and horrible.

you can't really describe it. you should have to feel it.
