In the version I watched they called him a 'wise man'. I don't know if that's just a title or if it was actually a man. He might have just trancended the concept of gender altogether.

The character is more of a concept than a physical thing, as he is supposed to take the 'opposing' or antagonizing form of whoever witnesses him, in order to help them over-come trauma and conflict.

Since the guy saw him first, he took the appearance of the women in his life, especially his sister, who he had to kill.

Since the girl heard him first, he took the personality/mannerisms of her father, who was killed in front of her.

yes. also the dialogue is a bit lengthy so be prepared for that too
