Atleast we do in Denmark, we do something called "Confirmation". Then you say yes to be christian or something. Alot of danish peoples do it, but noone really believe in anything. Its just something you do for the party and presents.

I'm no doctor, but I believe that when a woman is ovulating, the uterus lines its self with nutrient rich blood so that if a fertilized egg lands on it, its chances of survival are greater. When she doesn't get pregnant, the uterus pushes the old blood out, via a period.
