Pirate Bay is one of the few sites that help promote artists, not just allow their shit to be torrented. Not too long ago, they had an add for a song that talked about D.I.Y, or Do It Yourself. Some artists choose to let their stuff be torrented freely, therefor, getting their image out more. The song talks about letting people download your music, then they'll talk about it, if they like it, and will invest in your music. If they don't like it, they'll likely delete it, so no harm done.

I for one, am a college student who loves music. It's my minor, infact. For obvious reasons, I don't have money to just shovel out for CDs and stuff like that, so I like to torrent them to check them out first. Rather than being an 'immoral pirate', I'm being a 'careful consumer'. Testing an item before actually purchasing it.

While you do make a good point, that America was built on Freedoms, but it was also built on opportunities. Many artists do not get recognized by huge record companies, so they don't get signed, or their CDs don't get published. However, when a site like Pirate Bay shows their support for such an artist, millions of people get to see it. And if these people see it, and they like it, they'll tell their friends, and then they'll tell their friends, and so on and so forth. In another way of speaking, it's Free Marketing.

I respect your opinion, truly. I just wanted to show you a different side of thinking, in any case that you would like other things to improve your own argument in the future, perhaps.

It should be artists own choice whether they want their products to be free for download.
You say you can't afford buying lots of CDs, but you can buy a subscription for online music services. I pay less than 10$ each month in order to get acces to ~20 million tracks of music.
User avatar #110 - GamerMandrew (11/21/2012) [-]
In a few cases, it is the artist's choice. Some artist's allow their stuff to be torrented, as I mentioned above. And you see, I don't need to go through 20,000,000 tracks to find what I want, and I don't need to subscribe to a service.

For example... I can hear about a CD through a friend, torrent that CD or a song from it, listen to it, then purchase the CD myself, for a one time fee. In the short run, it may be more expensive, but in the long run, it saves me time, and money.

So in the end, I listen, I like, I buy. And sure, you could argue that YouTube is another way to listen to a song, but there are some cases where I'd like the song to listen to on the go. As I don't own a smart phone, I have to download it and put the song onto my phone to listen to it wherever I may be.

There are some people who pirate things for their own personal gain, but that's just a few people. I like to think that this community isn't exactly malicious, but some people take advantage of that. But as we all know, there are people like that everywhere, and in every situation.

Dude...
Why the fuck are you still awake?
User avatar #105 - GamerMandrew (11/21/2012) [-]
I'm wondering that myself. I tend to be more awake when I only sleep for five hours anyways. So I guess all's well.

I hate that your comment is being voted down so much, because honestly, I agree with what you are saying. (Not saying that I haven't pirated something or another in my lifetime...but...) Piracy is mostly people just being lazy and trying to get out of paying for things. People just don't want to admit that you're right.
User avatar #98 - fredeminator (11/21/2012) [-]
Ive pirated things aswel and I know that 95% of my friends have. None of us have done it because of freedom of speach and information. The ONLY reason is money. People should not justicy piracy with ideology.

Cute.... thanks for your opinion...

Allow me to offer you my opinion as well:
User avatar #88 - fredeminator (11/21/2012) [-]
Tried, but can't. I can get the tip of the penis into my butt, but it gets stiff which makes it impossible.

Also, thanks for sharing your opinion, very clever.

1.) As for you saying that they don't get paid, please refer to this comment: funnyjunk.com/funny_pictures/4248415/Anyone+want+a+gift+card/64#64

2.) No one says that they shouldn't get paid more than most of us. They work hard at what they do, so why not get paid for it.

3.) Piracy isn't only based on the fact that people want shit for free. Maybe people want to try a product without paying for it. If they truly like it, then they will pay for it. I'm sure that people on the internet may not like this, but I torrented on of the Black Veil Brides albums a while back just to say that I gave it a shot before I started bagging on it. I ended up liking it and buying all their albums.
I did the same thing with MLP.
I torrented the first few episodes and gave them a shot. I'm now a brony.
Don't think that all pirates are bad just because they choose not to pay.
User avatar #94 - fredeminator (11/21/2012) [-]
1. I think that would be an alright idea, since piracy can't be prevented. Sort of a public service agreement, but managing this would be impossible.

2. Some people say artists, actors etc. are greedy people and say they earn way too much. They say this to justify not paying for their products.

3. Some people will pay when they find out its a good product but most people wont.
User avatar #92 - rummler (11/21/2012) [-]

>the quality of the entertainment industry will decrease

that's exactly what people said about the radio and MP3 players and all they did was improve it.
#90 - fredeminator (11/21/2012) [-]
Take the money out of the industry and the things produced will not be as good.

When it comes to movies this is a fact.
I might not necessarily be true when it comes to music.
User avatar #83 - impwnuhard (11/21/2012) [-]
you sir do not seem to like the word free.
User avatar #89 - fredeminator (11/21/2012) [-]
That depends on who is free. Its hypocrisy to say that people who download data illegally should be free to do so - and at the same time say that people who produce things should not be free to keep what they own and have the properties for.

calling bullshit, do you see all the fucking computers in that room? im pretty sure this is how it goes
step 1 : he logs in to every account (actually he probably doesnt even do that he probably has them all permalogged so when he gets out of the screen saver they are ready to play.)
step 2 : he then does some weird shit where he makes the other accounts follow his main account, he checks all the macros to make sure when he presses the Q button on one character they all press the Q and do what he wants them to do.
step 3: ???
step 4 : profit?
now i know next to nothing about programming and WOW the most i know is that he is using some sort of mimic bot/mimic zombie program. what i do know is this "person" has no life. he probably works a 9 to 5 job and on weekends or when he has free time because he doesnt have to do shit because he lives in his moms basement, he does raids by himself because no one in his town plays wow because everyone is over 25 years old and has other things to do.

>implying that playing WOW by yourself and conducting raids by yourself constitutes having a life.
User avatar #323 - kusipaa (11/13/2012) [-]
Opinions, my friend. He has a life because he's doing something he enjoys. You have a life because you do something you enjoy. I have a life because I do something I enjoy.

Please, tell me what qualifies as having a life. I'm guessing you're going to say "going out clubbin' and fuckin' bitchez"
User avatar #325 - TheFixer (11/13/2012) [-]
that guess, it amuses me. i guess we will start with the basics here, you have to be well alive to have a life there now that the pissing match is done, i give the term "having a life" the following qualities, you have friends not a lot of them but enough of them to never get board in the event of all friends busy you have family to turn too, you go do activities with said friends or family which may include 'clubbin and fuckin' bitchez' as you so eligently put it or activites you enjoy doing; for me and my friends we enjoy playing magic the gathering, and playing certain online games like tf2, LoL, Portal2, BlackOps, heck we even enjoyed runescape back in the day, (you get the idea). this person who is conducting raids by himself has no life by my standards because he isnt doing activites with friends or family... also you've seemed to have missed the very subtile referance to the southpark episode about World of warcraft titled make love not warcraft it features some man who has no life who got to the highest level where he could kill kim jongs and then killed everyone in the world of warcraft which posed the question "how do you kill that which has no life?" the reference to this was me saying that this man who conducts raids by himself has no life.
User avatar #344 - kusipaa (11/13/2012) [-]
Yes, but who are you to say who has a life and who doesn't? How do you know he doesn't have friends? How do you know he doesn't do this while his friends are working or with their families? You never know, this guy could do all of the things you and your friends do.

But in today's society it's human nature to WANT, not because of something's usability but simply because it's pretty or shiny. Such an economic change wouldn't work (unless a slow societal change occurred) because people would just see it as an opportunity to buy luxury items they were never able to.

I'm not arguing with you, as you're stating facts. I just wanted to post my opinion on this.
