Mange tak. What a fancy ass term that is. I am not good at remembering terms. I will search for something that'll cover that.. I prefer to take a theme at a time, instead of looking into single things. If possible, a nice long video that dwells deep into the subject..

I saw a comment that said 'dogs have trouble seeing red balls in the green grass. Dont call them retards because of that'. This seems to be an extended explanation, altho i got fairly curious as to evolutionary advantages to color, and camouflage

Yes, it is indeed an interesting subject, I myself have to look further into this, if you like mammalian evolution, I'd like to suggest you check out binaural spectral-difference, this is also a fun thing knowing about that not a lot of people do.

It's about sound though.

If you call your dog from the kitchen, the dog will realize the sound comes from the kitchen, your parrot though, will not be able to.

humans evolved from night-active primates so that's why it happens to us.
todays dog evolved in areas rich in dense woods and stepes
with tall grass where they had the advantage only when they spot an enemy or prey first,
color wasn't that important to them as it is often a disadvantage to see it.
for example zebras evolved their patterns so that a heard looks lika a whole organsim to
lions, that's why lions only hunt zebras that have separated from their herd.

Can you explain how the myth of dogs having black/white vision originated? Just curious.

And thanks for the lesson.
User avatar #70 - freddyhollensen (11/13/2012) [-]
I'm not entirely sure, but I think it's somewhat straight forward.

The word color blind is used to describe people as well, notice how people who are color blind are not actually color-blind, I remember doing some test for the army, the nurse showed me a picture made in green and red dots, the red dots where forming a figure that I should describe, since I am not color blind, I could easily do it, but as she explained to me, normal color blind people would be unable to make a distinction between green and red. (Which came as a shock to me, since I thought color blind people saw the world in a grey tone scale)

This is completely ridiculous though, studies have show colorblindness to have evolutionary reasons and not being a disability, colorblind people seem to be better at spotting moving camouflaged targets, which may also explain why dogs are -> colorblind. (I have no idea though, I'm just guessing)

I think it's merely a ''jump to fast conclusions based on the name of the condition'' kind of situation.

Retinas have two kinds of cells: Rods and Cones. Rods detect light and movement but not color and cones detect color but don't detect faint light or movement. Dogs retinas have very few cones so they don't see color very much.

During the premiere of season 3 there were about a million or so commercials for "gak", some kind of silly putty thing. They're pretty much the most annoying commercials ever, so of course everyone immediately doesn't shut up about it.

Thanks, if you wish to follow what's going on, I've actually just made a facebook page like 10 minutes ago, we're at the moment 2-3 people working on content for Skyrim.

The page obviously isn't worth much at the moment, but soon I'll add some screenshots of places around the world, and eventually I'll make it into a real page with daily / weekly updates for your feed. ;)

Yeah same here, they're good stuff. You should post the follow up the Has Science Gone To Far post with the one of the fat guys as heavy metals. That made me laugh

Can't remember seeing that, I'll go look for it, unless you got the link to it on you? :b

Ha, brilliant, thanks mate... I'll save it in my folder for the next time I post ;) You could also post it yourself though, I see you're collecting quite a bit of thumbs yourself... Feel free to use the title :b

Would be more fitting though I think ;)
