"Great" is really pushing it, and I say that as someone who follows Bleach. Bleach really isn't as good as people try to make it out to be. It is like 'Rule of Cool, the Manga'. If it's cool, it happens. But overall Bleach is lacking in depth and the characters behave ridiculously illogically a lot of the time.

The manga is filled with nice little stories about the various characters within it (with the Arrancar having the best backstories out of any characters in the series) but they're never followed up on or even fulfilled in the first place. Really it's a manga where you lose count of all of the missed opportunities and wasted potential.

Really awesome things? You mean in the Quincy arc?

Like Masque De Masculine, the masked-wrestler Quincy (the people who only use bows and arrows) and Gremmy, the guy who can make anything he can imagine come true but he is the most amazingly unimaginative person you could ever give that power to.

Overall this Quincy arc has been one long string of meaningless bullshit with the occasional diamond in the mire. And by diamond I mean like... maybe a page or two of good content tops.

Not that I'm gonna stop following the manga, mind you, it's fucking hilarious. Unintentionally so but hilarious all the same.

I'm in the same boat bud, the first arc was kinda boring but the arcs when they are in the soul society saving rukia was awesome. The espada-arcs were also pretty cool but nothing beats the pre-vizard ichigo arcs for me. I'd also fuck Chad silly, that glorious spanish bastard no homo .
User avatar #70 - questionableferret (11/29/2014) [-]
If you ask me (and I'm assuming for the sake of this comment's existence that you did... just run with it) the first arc is actually the best the series ever got and it all started going downhill right after Ishida beats Mayuri.

In the first arc you see a bunch of really thoughtful dramatic concepts that go to the core of the importance of what a Shinigami is and how terrifying the Hollows are. You see how the worst Hollows have little tricks to them like the one that has familiars with it or the one that uses the soul of someone he killed to lure his prey in so he can kill them whilst tormenting the boy he killed forevermore.

And don't even get me started on that Grand Fisher bastard. Seriously, what a cunt.

Then you've got Kon! Do you remember that Kon actually had dimensions to him when he was introduced? He is a soul built specifically to fight and protect people... but he is reduced to a fucking gag for the next several hundred chapters because Kubo stops being able to write.

Also, Chad? Remember how badass Chad was? HE THREW A TELEPHONE POLE AT AN INVISIBLE MONSTER!

But then you enter the soul society. The fights with Renji and Ikaku are really well done and inform us a lot about Ichigo as a person. The fight with Mayuri is a masterpiece of shounen writing. Then you've got Orihime... who is a glorified compass throughout the arc. And then there's Chad who gets stomped on.

If you look at the series from that point onwards it's actually a downwards spiral. It never got as deep as it was in Karakura town again. Ichigo became more one-note with time. His power level in the Byakuya fight just takes such a massive shot upwards that it trivialises the hollows. Chad literally never does anything of significance for the rest of the manga.

All-in-all, Bleach had the heart to be one of the best shounen ever made but Tite Kubo got wrapped up in the rule of cool and along the way lost the heart of Bleach.

Ironically you could say the series became rather... hollow.
User avatar #101 - KazumaKyu (11/29/2014) [-]
God dammit I've always managed to avoid Bleach and now you've gone and made it sound interesting. FFS questionableferret why you gotta be like this
User avatar #105 - questionableferret (11/29/2014) [-]
Also, it should be mentioned, the Arrancar from Bleach have some of the best character designs and backstories, just don't expect Tite Kubo to be smart enough to do anything with them.

If you like the dumber kinds of AMVs then Bleach will probably deliver on everything you want as a viewer, but if you value depth Bleach won't entertain you past the first 20 episodes, maybe even 18.

Bleach is one of those series that could easily have been one of the best things you'll ever see but ended up turning into one of the dumbest things you could possibly imagine.
#135 - happyboy (11/29/2014) [-]
I agree with you. In my opinion, Bleach ended for me after Yamamato's lose. You see that things becomes more nonsense, especially whats going on in the manga now. I can't believe that Kubo actually writes like this for the past 4 years, not realizing that he's only making his story worse. Anyhow, I'd recommend you to read Tokyo Ghoul manga. This story is basically a perfect version of Bleach.
User avatar #208 - questionableferret (11/29/2014) [-]
Really? That was the point where it got too dumb for you? I thought it was absolute nonsense that five people and a cat could throw a system of about 1000 gods of death into absolute chaos. Or how Ichigo manages in three days what most gods of death don't manage in three centuries. Or how Ichigo ends up having Quincy powers.

There's a lot of dumb shit going on in Bleach.

And Tokyo Ghoul is lacking in the same visual flair and creativity that Bleach had. I like a good story as much as the next guy but it just doesn't do for me what Bleach did for me.

I would suggest to you the anime/manga I suggested in comment #97.
User avatar #106 - KazumaKyu (11/29/2014) [-]
Always a shame when that happens to a series that could have been great.
User avatar #113 - questionableferret (11/29/2014) [-]
In fairness to Bleach, it's not a total waste. Once it hits the Arrancar arc you've got those backstories and it goes into full 'Rule of Cool' mode which makes for kickass AMVs:

And since I feel kinda dirty linking a Bleach AMV... have a funny Magi AMV too:

User avatar #104 - KazumaKyu (11/29/2014) [-]
Magi mentioned, swell with amazing character design and a manga that doesn't focus nearly enough on Morgiana.

Haven't watched Kingdom or Onepunch Man yet, might have to give them a shot as well.

As for Bleach, are you saying that the whole 'saving Rukia' arc isn't any good? Admittedly that was where I lost interest (I did use to watch Bleach on TV back when it first started airing, but never really got into it if you know what I mean).
#109 - questionableferret (11/29/2014) [-]
Outside of the fight between Ishida and Mayuri, no, it's not. The majority of the arc is spent running around endless, featureless, identical corridors, Chad gets pulped and does nothing, Orihime does bugger all, Ichigo's fights are cool but nothing to write home about depth-wise and the fight with Byakuya is the moment when the series just stops caring about balancing their characters and goes full DBZ with it's fights, but only for Ichigo and his enemies, leaving all of the other characters who were once relevant in the dust behind him.

It's terribly written but for that Mayuri fight which is just... it's great. It's short, it's sweet, it's emotionally charged, and it looks badass.

And I distinctly highlighted the MANGA for Kingdom and Onepunch Man and I can't stress this enough. Don't watch the Kingdom anime until after you've read the manga. The anime is trash for the first season and then 'meh' for the second. Kingdom is clearly made for Manga only and it does not translate well into animation. The same is true of Onepunch Man, both of these series are best viewed in their Manga formats.

Here's Onepunch Man, you will see why it works best as a Manga almost immediately:
www.mangareader.net/onepunch-man/1/4

And then there's Kingdom, which I just can't effectively put into words. It is completely free of fanservice even though it has some full-on nudity sex-scenes, it treats all of its characters respectfully, it is one of the funniest manga I've come across, and the artwork is just stellar.

If you want just the battle part, here's a much better video. I can't seem to find one that has the actual depth included. (Which may well speak volumes of the values of the people who tend to watch Bleach, and why it continued to be popular even after it lost it's depth.)

www.youtube.com/watch?v=vh1gvf3LX1U
User avatar #98 - questionableferret (11/29/2014) [-]
Actually, watching that youtube video it does miss out on a lot of the meaty, depth-y parts, so if you're interested I suggest you try to find a longer, uncut version. My apologies for that.
User avatar #97 - questionableferret (11/29/2014) [-]
For the first 20 episodes it's pretty good. Then there's a dumb patch where not much happens and it's basically setup for the big arc that's about to happen, then it's 100 episodes or so of just running around with very little happening.

Honestly, if you're not interested in shounen then the first 20 episodes of Bleach are about as much good as you'll get out of the series because past that point the pretence is dropped and it becomes pure shounen, getting dumber and dumber with each fight the main character gets into.

I will, however, point out that the fight between Uryu Ishida and Kurotsuchi Mayuri is one of the best fights in all of shounen, meeting the criteria for depth, action, and badass visual design.

www.youtube.com/watch?v=4OLGvLu8i7M

If you're lacking for something to wet your whistle that is perhaps a little bit smarter than the fare you mantioned there I'd suggest you head directly for the mangas of Kingdom or Onepunch Man, or the anime of Magi. All three of those series will give you much more than any old regular shounen will.

Magi is based on the tales of the Arabian Knights mixed with a LOT of shounen. It has a solid heart to it and deals with concepts of slavery, democracy, revolution, and just a load of generally tricky subjects overall, putting its own spin on it all and being pretty feely when it does it. It was the first manga to ever make me actually cry with joy because of something that happened during the Balbad arc so... there's that.

Onepunch Man is a manga about a superhero who ends each fight in a single punch... and it is fucking hilarious. It is a total genre-subversion merged with a loving parody all wrapped up in magnificent artwork.

Kingdom is based in the Chinese Warring States Period that lasted for about 200 years and gave us some of the greatest military minds of all time. It's pretty shounen-y but the series plays out a lot more tactically and thought-based than most and no other series has tension like Kingdom
User avatar #76 - camzore (11/29/2014) [-]
I agree with you on pretty much all of what you said on the first arc, the problem I had with it was the school life parts. I know they're necessary to juxtapose life as a shinigami but it still doesn't dampen how dull it got at times. The scene that pops to mind is when all the girls that are completely inconsequential as characters except for Orihime and Rukia are sitting around eating shit and discussing how Orihime has big tits because food or some shit. I know it was meant to show how Rukia has begun to adapt to the life as a human or whatnot but it was still pretty dull and didn't even offer any tangible comic relief. It seems to me that everything before Rukia-being-saved was more focused because the plot had a clear goal in a clear setting, if that makes sense. If this makes sense as well, the power level on all the characters seemed to have a clear limit at Ban Kai, but after the whole saving Rukia arc the shit had to keep ramping up and it just seemed to be a little dumb to me. The obvious limit was good because it gave Ichigo a clear thing to aim for with the Hollow twist, but after that it was a case of "JUST KEEP GETTING MORE POWERFUL AD INFINITUM LOL " . Chad did manage to become strong again when he fought that arrancar in Los Noches and that fucking badass El Directo that made an imprint of a skull in the wall, but Kubo could've definitely done more with him in the soul society arc, to show how a human can still hold his own.

What you said about the series becoming hollow rings pretty true, it started to focus less on the characters and their struggles with the. challenges posed upon them and rather Dragonball Z powerlevel destroy everything I can't help but feel a little restless though rewatching it because like you said when Ichigo get's really powerful later on it kinda makes the whole hollow business seem a little piss cheap, I mean the first menos he fought coulda been defeated with his butt cheeks if he fought it a couple of months after.
User avatar #78 - questionableferret (11/29/2014) [-]
You're right that things in the school could have been written better, though in fairness that was the fault of the anime, not the manga. In the manga that stuff flies past but the anime had a low budget at the time and had to make ends meet by elongating the scenes where very little happened.

As for the Bankai... I think that was a mistake. Not that it was included, but that Ichigo achieved it in the second arc of Bleach. It was introduced and achieved in the span of a single arc, which just goes to cheapen the concept as a whole. A human being manages to get Bankai in three days but everyone else struggles for decades, if not more to reach it, many of whom never reaching it at all.

Plus, it kicks the series into overdrive. If you look at the fights Ichigo goes through they're all about the same level, even Kenpachi:
1) The first few Hollows.
2) Grand Fisher
3) Ikaku
4) Renji
5) Kenpachi

Each of them are defeated without the need to use Bankai and it makes the fights much more engaging because of it. Ichigo is more vulnerable and basic hits are gonna be more dangerous. After the fight with Kenpachi you could still see Ichigo going back to Karakura town and struggling with a tough Hollow or two.

Then the Byakuya fight happens and suddenly he's a fucking god. Imagine how cool the series could have been if things had been handled differently and characters were rearranged/nerfed.
User avatar #84 - camzore (11/29/2014) [-]
Yeah, the bankai concept could have definitely been timed better, but I still like its inclusion in the series. While I don't love it a shitload on its own, I liked the fact that it gave a clear limit/goal/etc for Ichigo. It should have definitely been a thing to be learnt AFTER the fight with Byakuya, or at least the training take much longer. I mean 1 month would have been a stretch, but 3 days is fucking dumb like you said. I suppose the shikai could have served the same purpose, but it was mastered by everyone way too early to be a solid limit/goal.

The evidence of this lack-of-limit negatively affecting the story is made obvious after the arc. Afterwards he seems to keep powering up without any restraint and it makes it seem kinda tasteless. Instead of interesting fights after Kenpachi it was all about muh power level. The prime example of this for me was the fight with Ulquiorra. I'm not gonna lie, it's my favourite fight in Bleach but I know I'm in the minority. Instead of Ulquiorra being defeated in a cool way it’s just about 'u activated my power level trap card durr durr'. I think it was less of the fact that the bankai being introduced that was the problem, rather there wasn't anything restraining Ichigo from becoming super mega OP that made the fights less good. But my mindset still doesn't solve the problem of the previous shit being laughably weak when he is in bankai.
User avatar #85 - questionableferret (11/29/2014) [-]
The Ulquiorra fight is a highlight in Bleach. It was basically the point at which the 'Rule of Cool' was used best. No dabbling in anything important or consistent, just dumb cool shit happening.

But it is not my favourite because of that. It is my favourite because of what Inogue does in the scene linked in the .gif. "Save me, Kurosaki-kuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu- *splat*"

Every now and then you come across a scene that would be made infinitely better with the addition of a woodchipper. This is one of those scenes.

And then very, very rarely you find the scene that was directed by a true master director... because they include the woodchipper.

All of the filler was terrible. If you watch the first non-filler episode after the fall of Aizen, it's not as good as classic bleach, but it's really good none-the-less. They stopped the anime after that because they decided it's better to wait for the manga to end (2-4 years) then pick it back up with no more shitty filler episodes.

I've been KO'd by Ganon at around 70 as shield form shulk with full defensive item investments (who should at that point be the most resistant to KOs in the game) when he landed a B on me (another buff I guess they gave him is it's a whole lot harder to interrupt his B so it threw me off guard when I landed a smash attack on him and I still got destroyed)
User avatar #22 - fozzoul (11/27/2014) [-]
Yea, i think they gave him 2 I-frames on his warlock punch. Damn, they buffed ganon hard.

User avatar #10 - bagguhsleep (11/27/2014) [-]
so at % should I be nervous around a ganon?

I don't have the game, but from what I've seen, people easily live past 150%, so could ganon just cheese someone at half of that or something?
User avatar #11 - fozzoul (11/27/2014) [-]
depends on the move, if you combo them and if your oponent is heavy or light. Lets use regular Link as an example:

Warlock punch could smash him around 60% depending on where he is standing

Normal -> A smash around 80% if just a quick tap and 50-ish% if fully loaded.

Then theres a combo i usually go for when trying to beat someone. This works when your oponent is somewhere around 40%: When they run towards you trying to run smash, you jump into the air and do a down b, follow up by jumping and doing a forward b which brings you to the ground, back off when they get up and do a standing forward b, shield to block their attack when they rise from being knocked down, and then smash.

Its a little bit tricky to hit everything, but if you do they're done.

Heavier characters like Swagmaster Dedede usually makes it to 100+% before going down, so yea.

Its cool, I love me some smash, but peach is best played by abusing her float against heavier chars that can't anti air her out of it, ganon being one, zelda being another. The thing in my mind is like you said, ganon is not offensive but that means that he can't DO anything if your opponent doesnt make any obvious mistakes.
User avatar #16 - fozzoul (11/21/2014) [-]
Yup. mastering the dodge mechanic is essential if you wanna play ganny. The beautiful thing about gannys up b is that its a straight shot upwards that grabs your opponent and then launches them with a smash like explosion, so if you play it right then you can even get peach down from the skies. He's really not as straight forward as people often assume he is, which leads to many people dropping him after the first match they've played with him. Hes really fun once you get into the groove.

Either I'm really good or the people I played with are really bad (or a combination of both) but I main peach and his hitboxes are so easy to avoid with sheilddashing, DACUS, Float Down Tilts, or even just projectiles.
User avatar #13 - fozzoul (11/21/2014) [-]
I actually beat a peach in a tourney a while back. ganny is a powerful combo char, so if you can chain his jump+ down b into a standing ground b, normal hit and then upwards b you can eliminate most people at around 40% (them being at 40% when you start that combo)

The thing is, even tho he hits like a truck, hes not an offensive kind of character, you wont be able to get that combo off by chasing your enemy, you have to make them chase you. I managed to get that combo going because i dodged the turnips n' shit and made the guy come closer for close combat, avoiding his down smash by jumping in the air and then starting the down b chain.

Well this was a lot of text, sorry bout that.
