By definition, it is still stealing. Legally, piracy is a form of theft, and treated as such.

This isn't the 1800s anymore. Digital media is massive, and physically stolen media is literally about 80 cents of plastic and the rest of the cost is infinitely copyable data.

Ironically, the maltreatment of the term "piracy" started in the times when digital media didn't exist. It refers to the copying, distribution, and sale of actual physical objects. Piracy is a term used for counterfeiting for financial gains, and was only recently adopted for peer-to-peer sharing.

I just have to make one thing clear:
There are two types of theft, the actual theft and the term used in copyright infringement. In copyright infringement theft is when a person excercise one or more of the rights held by the copyright holder. Actual theft is the act of taking others property. Legally there is precedence for distinguishing the two.
All I'm saying is that calling both acts by the same name is misleading, as they are not treated the same in a (US) court of law.

Potential losses are valued as real losses. If you destroy all data relating to a movie a month before release, then technically you've just destroyed a single movie, but you've destroyed millions of potential units, which are just as valuable.

Also, the definition of stealing is to take someone's property without legal right or permission, which also applies to intellectual property. It's apples and fruit. Not all fruit are apples, but all apples are fruit. Likewise, not all stealing is piracy, but all piracy is stealing.

I agree that all piracy is illegal, but that doesn't make it stealing. It isn't theft. It's completely illicit, but a pirated copy is not stolen.
And I'm sure that's the definition of stealing, but that doesn't mean piracy falls into it. Equating theft and piracy is and actual real world problem, as they are not legally the same. There's and important distinction between the two.
It's impossible to pirate a physical object, for one thing. I can't pirate your apple. I would have to be able to construct an exact copy of your apple without doing harm to the original. I can understand why there's a problem with that, as the apple farmers would go broke, but that doesn't mean the act of copying can be equated with the act of stealing. Just because the potential loss is valued as real, doesn't make it so.

Wrong on that last bit. The don't lose anything as such, but there is a potential loss in the amount of sales for a particular item that gets pirated a lot.

Take Adobe, they must lose out on millions because their shit is getting pirated 24/7.

Either way... YAR HAR FIDDLE TEE DEE
