Yeah he used religion as a tool because he was a christian, there is plenty of evidence that say he was in fact religion and none that he was an atheist.

Theres none to suggest he was a christian and plenty to suggest he had no religious belief. He robbed and destroyed churches and synagougues alike for example. He burned bibles and torahs aswell. He appealed to the major faith of Germany but once he was in power any respect he had for religion died out because he could not control it.
